- Position Summary
Wood Mackenzie is seeking an experienced Senior LNG Waterborne Analyst to join our Global Waterborne Analytics team.
The successful candidate will bring demonstrable expertise in LNG shipping markets and maritime data and will play a leading role in maintaining and advancing the quality of our vessel and cargo movement datasets, supporting LNG shipping forecasts, and helping expand Wood Mackenzie's ship-tracking and short-term LNG analytics capabilities.
This is a senior, technically demanding role requiring both deep subject matter knowledge and strong analytical skills.
The successful candidate will be expected to contribute meaningfully from day one, bringing fresh perspective and expertise that elevates the team's existing capabilities.
This is a full-time position based in London or Edinburgh.
Key Responsibilities
- Serve as the primary owner of Wood Mackenzie's LNG Cargo Tracking dataset, with full accountability for its accuracy, consistency, and completeness across vessel positions, cargo movements, and fleet data
- Draw on deep LNG shipping expertise to proactively identify, investigate, and resolve data discrepancies and gaps, anticipating issues through active use of the data rather than waiting for problems to surface
- Set and enforce data quality standards across the wider maritime team, establishing scalable and consistent processes that others work within
- Continuously assess the integrity and coverage of the cargo tracking dataset, leading efforts to close gaps and evaluate new or alternative data sources where current coverage falls short
- Function as the internal authority on LNG cargo tracking data, the person colleagues, product teams, and clients can rely on when questions of data quality or provenance arise
- Forecasting & Analytical Contribution
- Play a substantive role in the development and maintenance of shipping models covering vessel movements, fleet utilization, and volume calibration
- Lead sections of the short-term LNG shipping report, including data production, quality assurance, and market commentary
- Contribute independently to short-term and medium-term LNG shipping forecasts, drawing on strong market awareness and analytical judgement
- Help develop a weekly LNG shipping report: ship-tracking highlights, notable vessel movements, new terminals, and additional notes on the waterborne market
- Bring knowledge and ideas that help push the team's analytical output beyond current capabilities, whether in methodology, product scope, or market coverage
- Product Development & Capability Expansion
- Function as a key contributor to Wood Mackenzie's LNG ship-tracking development and related short-term shipping products, helping shape both the analytical framework and the commercial product direction
- Identify opportunities to use AI and automation tools to improve data workflows, reduce manual burden, and enhance reporting quality and speed
- Support new product development by translating market knowledge and client needs into concrete analytical improvements
- Handle client data queries and analytical questions with confidence and authority, escalating only where appropriate
- Collaborate with the broader LNG and gas research teams to ensure maritime data and shipping analysis is integrated effectively into wider market forecasting
- Required Qualifications & Experience
- Demonstrable professional experience in LNG shipping, maritime analytics, or a closely related area of energy market research, with a track record of producing high-quality, data-driven analysis
- Strong working knowledge of the global LNG shipping market, including fleet dynamics, trade flows, vessel types, cargo economics, and key market participants
- Proven experience working with large, complex datasets and applying rigorous data quality processes
- Practical coding skills (e. g. Python, SQL, or equivalent) or a strong, evidenced track record of adopting technical tools quickly
- Familiarity with data visualization tools and their application to shipping or energy market analysis
- Fluent spoken and written English
- AI & Technology
- Demonstrated use of AI or automation tools in a professional context to improve analytical or data workflows
- Ability to identify and execute automation opportunities for repetitive data tasks and reporting processes
- Deep subject matter knowledge in LNG shipping, sufficient to challenge data, identify anomalies, and provide informed market commentary independently
- Keen sense of ownership: comfortable holding accountability for data quality and analytical output
- Initiative-taking analytical person who can work with ambiguity and make sound judgements under time pressure
- Clear, confident communicator, able to present technical findings to both specialist and non-specialist audiences
- Collaborative by nature, but with the experience and confidence to lead within their area of expertise
- Demonstrable curiosity about expanding the boundaries of what the team can deliver, whether through new data sources, methodologies, or tools
