EHS Specialist in Worthing

Wood is looking for an EHS Specialist in Environmental Compliance and Construction Safety to join our busy team on an 18-month PAYE contract, based at our client’s site full time in Worthing in West Sussex. This is a site-based role, with a requirement to be on site during working days; flexible working arrangements are subject to discussion on a case-by-case basis. Please note that all employment is subject to completion of mandatory pre-employment screening checks relevant to this role.

We are seeking an experienced professional to join a high performing team on one of our clients' flagship sites. As the site’s Environmental Specialist and a core member of the EHS team, you will bring unquestioned environmental technical proficiency to the role and a demonstrable ability to drive continuous EHS improvement and risk reduction. You will develop a truly engaging EHS culture where everyone works together to reduce risks in a culture which allows people to be at their best. You will be experienced in leading successful EHS programmes.

The successful applicant will be responsible for overall management and improvement of Environmental Sustainability performance across the site, working with the Engineering team, the EHS Director and other team members as appropriate. This position will include leading and hosting audits in Environmental Compliance, Construction / Demolition and other EHS topics. You may also get the opportunity to act as the deputy for the EHS Director as appropriate.

Key Responsibilities:

• Lead the site Environmental compliance programme, ensuring delivery of performance targets and adherence to UK/EU legislation, clients standards, and relevant engineering/EHS requirements.
• Develop, implement, and monitor Environmental management system elements, including Environmental and Safety targets, metrics, and continuous improvement actions.
• Build Environmental capability and consciousness across engineering and operations through risk assessments, training, coaching, and guidance.
• Act as the site focal point for regional and global Environmental Sustainability experts and regulators such as the Environment Agency, coordinating specialist support, knowledge sharing, and site sustainability initiatives (Carbon, Water, Waste, Biodiversity).
• Provide technical Environmental support on Net Zero Carbon, Energy, Water, Wastewater, and Waste Regulations, ensuring robust compliance and performance monitoring.
• Oversee EHS management for construction and demolition projects, including Contractor Safety standards, Permit to Work, RAMS, and coordination with project teams.
• Lead the preparation, update, and review of PCI packs, Construction Safety Plans, and Construction Phase Plans, and liaise with local council on notifiable work and planning permissions.
• Provide wider EHS leadership for the site, contributing to EHS strategies, audits (Levels 1, 2, 3 and 4), emergency planning/response, incident investigation, and improvement programmes.
• Maintain effective relationships with key EHS stakeholders (regulators, Global EHS, auditing functions, Site Leadership Team) and support regulatory inspections and site objectives.
• Deputise for the EHS Director and other subject matter experts as required, ensuring ongoing implementation of EHS policies, procedures, and crisis management activities.

Qualifications:

• Bachelors or Masters degree in Engineering, Science, Environmental Health and Safety, or in relevant technical disciplines.
• NEBOSH (National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health) Certificate, or an equivalent qualification in Construction Safety or Environmental Management.
• Experience working with multiple engineering disciplines (Maintenance, Utilities, Compliance, Reliability or Capital) within a manufacturing, process safety, or industrial environment.
• Experience managing and delivering technical or operational projects.
• Excellent communication across all levels of the organization.
• Experience working in the pharmaceutical industry or a regulated manufacturing environment.
• Dangerous Goods: Dangerous Goods Safety Adviser Certificate.
• Operational knowledge and understanding of manufacturing processes in the pharmaceutical or FMCG (Fast-Moving Consumer Goods) or any other high hazard industry.
• Chartered status in relevant Engineering, Scientific or Technical discipline.
• The ability to coach/mentor/inspire site front line leaders, engineers, and technicians in order to ensure they can proactively identify risks and implement robust solutions is a core skill.
• Exceptional influencing, leadership, and decision-making capabilities.
• Sound working knowledge of the physical infrastructure of a Pharma site and processes.
