We are seeking expression of interest from candidates. This is not currently a live role. We are seeking an experienced Biomass Expert to support technical, engineering, and advisory services across a broad range of biomass‑related projects (for example power generation or gasification into SAF). The ideal candidate brings deep expertise in biomass feedstocks, conversion technologies, process engineering, equipment specification, regulatory frameworks, and project development within the renewable energy sector. You will provide consultancy to our clients' projects, develop robust technical solutions, work as part of multidisciplinary studies, and support the strategic growth of our low‑carbon and renewable energy portfolio.
Responsibilities
- Technical Leadership
- Act as the subject‑matter expert for biomass technologies, including: Combustion, gasification, pyrolysis, anaerobic digestion, materials handling, pelletisation, torrefaction, biochar production, and advanced biofuels.
- Develop engineering inputs into concept / feasibility studies, Front End Engineering Design projects and detailed design and procurement phases.
- Support estimating input for OPEX and CAPEX estimates and assessment of biomass solutions, sustainability, pricing, and supply chain logistics.
- Project Delivery
- Lead technical workstreams on biomass‑related engineering and consultancy projects.
- Conduct techno‑economic assessments, energy yield estimations, and mass/energy balance calculations.
- Provide input into environmental, permitting, and sustainability assessments including emissions, lifecycle analysis (LCA), and GHG evaluations.
- Oversee vendor evaluation, equipment selection, and technical risk assessments.
- Client Advisory & Stakeholder Management
- Engage with clients to understand requirements, shape scopes of work, and deliver clear, actionable insights.
- Present findings to technical and non‑technical stakeholders.
- Support public sector, private sector, and investor‑led projects, offering strategic and due‑diligence support.
- Business Development
- Contribute to proposal writing, bid development, and client presentations.
- Support the expansion of the consultancy’s biomass and broader renewable‑energy offerings.
- Identify emerging technologies, market trends, and partnership opportunities.
- Internal Collaboration
- Work with process, mechanical, electrical, environmental, and commercial teams to deliver integrated project solutions.
- Mentor junior engineers and provide knowledge‑sharing across the organisation.
Qualifications
Essential
- Degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Renewable Energy, Environmental Engineering, or a related field.
- Professional experience in biomass or bioenergy technologies (engineering consultancy experience highly preferred).
- Strong understanding of: Biomass conversion technologies and process design, feedstock characteristics and supply chains, energy systems, plant performance, and emissions control.
- Experience conducting feasibility studies, due‑diligence assessments, and techno‑economic modelling.
- Ability to interpret and apply biomass‑related regulations, sustainability certifications (e.g., SBP, FSC, RSB), and policy frameworks.
- Excellent written and verbal communication.
Desirable
- Chartered Engineer (CEng) or equivalent.
- Experience with process simulation software (Aspen HYSYS, Aspen Plus, etc.).
- Knowledge of carbon accounting, LCA tools, and ESG frameworks.
- Experience working with investors, developers, utilities, or industrial clients.
- Exposure to complementary renewable technologies (solar, hydrogen, CCUS, bioenergy with CCS).
