Wood is currently sourcing Senior Structural Engineer candidates for an Expression of Interest role we may have available within our Operations team in Glasgow. Please note that this is not an active position at this stage.

The Role: For strong structural engineers, an exciting opportunity to shift beyond conventional buildings and infrastructure and apply your technical capability where it will have industry-wide impact. The energy sector—Blue & Green hydrogen projects, energy transition projects, Sustainable Aviation Fuel and Carbon Capture projects - needs engineers who can think critically, design elegantly, and bring rigour to complex structural challenges.

If you’re working toward IStructE registration in the next 12–24 months, this transition not only accelerates your professional growth but exposes you to an environment where advanced analysis, novel materials, and unique loading conditions become part of your day-to-day engineering toolkit. Designing the future. Transforming the world P&E offers a wide range of opportunities which will allow you to develop your skills across a portfolio of onshore projects in different sectors. Our current portfolio includes green hydrogen and fuel switching, as well as supporting local clients with energy transition. Additionally, we work on UK refineries, petrochemical facilities, fine chemicals and pharmaceutical facilities. We have a number of clients who we are working with to design their pilot plants to test exciting new technologies, with a view to partnering with them as they move to design and build full scale commercial facilities.

Responsibilities:

  • Providing discipline expertise: Solves problems requiring development of new approaches or new uses for existing approaches; exercises mature professional judgment in evaluating and selecting technical strategic options.
  • As necessary, modifies established guidelines, devises new approaches, applies existing criteria in new ways and draws conclusions from comparative situations.
  • Regularly functions as a technical leader or significant contributor to a major complex problem or project.
  • Produces innovative ideas and solves problems requiring development of new approaches or new uses for existing approaches.
  • Consistently called on to use creativity and professional judgement to formulate results based on engineering standards, experience and constructive thinking.
  • Develops unique solutions for complex technical problems.
  • Anticipates potential problems and takes the initiative to solve complex problems through creative thinking and creative use of internal and external resources both inside and outside of discipline expertise.
  • Exercises mature professional judgement in identifying the implications of experimental results.
  • Understands customer needs and applies technical solutions to meet goals.
  • Provide technical input and support to proposals as required.

Qualifications:

  • Degree Qualifications MEng (Hons) Civil Engineering.
  • Professional Qualifications IStructE (or preparing to sit).

Skills/Experience:

  • Experienced design in buildings and large infrastructure projects designing in reinforced concrete elements and structural steelwork elements.
  • Design to Eurocodes and to older British standards such as BS5950 and BS8110 advantageous.
  • Computer literate and can use TEDDS, Tekla Structures, Tekla Structural Designer, STAAD Pro and/or other similar analysis packages.
  • Experience of design and analysis of older (pre Eurocodes) legacy structures advantageous including design beyond code limits.
  • Experience of design of structures beyond design life would be desirable but not strictly required.
  • Experience of working on Front End Engineering (FFED) studies preferred.
