Historic Newspapers is the world’s leading publisher of newspaper history books. We sell these books, and our archival original newspapers, through our website at historic-newspapers.com. Historic Newspapers is a sister company to Wonderbly, the world’s leading publisher of personalised books, sharing tech, staff, and office space in Bloomsbury, London.
We’re seeking an experienced Product Manager to own the Historic Newspapers digital product and drive growth in the coming year. This collaborative role involves working closely with publishing, commercial, and technology teams. The primary focus is on product development and increasing conversion on our customised Shopify website.
The ideal candidate will have experience with Shopify, DTC ecommerce, and managing product roadmaps. You will oversee our relationship with a contract engineering partner and internal developers, managing all aspects of product management within a small, agile, commercially driven team. Beyond Shopify, the role covers all technical systems supporting our products, including custom software for newspaper book publishing and tools for managing our extensive archive of over three million newspapers. Experience with these systems is desirable.
The role reports to the Head of Product at Historic Newspapers and will be supported by Wonderbly’s product leaders. It is initially a 3-4 day per week contract until Q1 2026, with potential for alternatives including permanent employment. The team is based in London and Scotland, with at least one day per week in the London office, and flexibility for up to three days in person.
Key qualities and experience include:
- Collaborative, articulate, and empathetic team player, comfortable working cross-functionally with developers and marketing teams
- Numerate and analytical, capable of creating reports and conducting research
- Design-aware, understanding the importance of great design and able to sketch wireframes and give feedback
- Experience managing high-quality DTC ecommerce products with £5M+ turnover
- Proficiency with Shopify, including custom development projects
- Experience managing contract and in-house development teams
- Passion for books, publishing, newspapers, or history is a plus
