Launch your engineering career as an Electrical Design Apprentice at Biffa. The Engineering Design Technician Apprenticeship is a 4 year programme where you will learn how to produce engineering designs and drawings for components, structures and systems used in industrial and commercial construction.

This role is based in Milton Keynes where you will spend 80% of your time learning on the job, and the remaining 20% studying virtually with Train’d Up. Your starting salary of £25,792 will increase each year of your apprenticeship, depending on your progress through the scheme. On successful completion, you will gain a formal and recognised Level 3 qualification. Graduates will also have the necessary experience and qualifications to obtain EngTech status with the Institution of Engineering and Technology.

A quick look at the role:

  • You will produce designs and drawings for structures, piping, electrical systems, control and instrumentation systems and mechanical components used across the Biffa sites.
  • Although office based, travel will be required.

Your core responsibilities:

  • Produce detailed electrical drawings or models in accordance with the specified design intent, company policies, industry codes, regulations, standards, and procedures.
  • Utilise digital technologies and techniques, such as Computer-Aided Design (CAD) and Building Information Modelling (BIM), to prepare, develop, and present electrical designs following approved design procedures and systems.
  • Interpret technical specifications and collaborate with stakeholders to develop effective and efficient design solutions.
  • Review engineering drawings for accuracy and propose corrective actions to ensure technical compliance.
  • Generate design ideas and concepts to address engineering challenges.
  • Evaluate design options to identify cost-effective and practical solutions.
  • Demonstrate a thorough understanding of engineering codes and standards.
  • Proficiently use drawing software packages for 2D and 3D modelling.

Requirements:

  • GCSEs at Grade C/4 or above (or the equivalent) in Maths and English.
  • Due to funding rules, you must NOT already have a qualification in a similar subject at the same or higher level than this apprenticeship.
  • Strong interest in engineering and design.
