Job
Job Title: AI Control Engineer
Company: Luffy AI
Team: Applications (multidisciplinary)
Employment Type: Permanent, full-time
Luffy AI is the foundation AI company at the forefront of the Physical AI revolution. Spun out of the UK Atomic Energy Authority, we are a team of engineers, physicists and AI researchers building the intelligence that will run the next hundred years of industry: in every factory, vehicle, robot and machine that does something real. Most motors, drives and systems that move, heat or react still run on control algorithms invented before the microchip, never designed to learn, adapt or improve. We are changing that.
Job Role
We are looking for an enthusiastic and innovative AI Control Engineer to apply our novel AI approaches to real-world environments, building AI controllers for industrial customers and their suppliers. The role suits someone with broad interests across mechatronics, control engineering, industrial processes, robotics, simulation and modelling, and software engineering, who is comfortable working at the interface between software and hardware, from wiring a controller or using an oscilloscope to writing strong software. You will help characterise systems such as motors, drones and furnaces, and as an early team member in a growing startup you will be able to influence the direction of the company and shape the role to your interests.
Key Responsibilities
- Performing system identification and characterisation of systems, including developing test setups and procedures to empirically improve the validity of digital twin models.
- Assisting with the development of demo suites and test rigs that demonstrate the capabilities of our framework to customers.
- Performing system integration and field testing, including at customer sites.
- Developing and enhancing control software for real-world applications.
- Contributing to the development of digital twin models and AI controllers.
Essential Requirements
- University degree in a relevant area of engineering or science (e.g. Control Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, Mechatronics).
- Relevant work experience, preferably in industry.
- Practical experience with industrial control systems such as PLCs and Variable Frequency Drives.
- Good programming skills, including Python and familiarity with C.
- High degree of autonomy, the ability to learn new applications and technologies rapidly, and enthusiasm for learning.
- Good communication skills.
Desirable
- Practical experience of system identification and characterisation of electromechanical and dynamic systems.
- Good understanding of feedback control system design.
- Experience with industrial-standard motor control systems and programming (e.g. PLCs).
- Familiarity with basic Reinforcement Learning techniques for robotics and industrial control.
- Experience or interest in genetic and evolutionary computation techniques.
- An advanced degree may be an advantage but is not required.
- No specific AI expertise is required, though an active interest in AI and its potential in control systems is advantageous. We welcome applicants with non-traditional career paths or equivalent experience.
Location
Primary location: Culham Campus, Abingdon, Oxfordshire, UK
Working pattern: Hybrid, typically at least 3 days per week in the office
Other: Small office in Bristol; occasional travel to customer sites for integration and field testing
Luffy AI is committed to building a diverse and inclusive workplace. We welcome applications from all backgrounds, regardless of race, gender, disability, religion, sexual orientation or age.
