DWP is the UK's largest government department. We help people into work, and make payments worth over £195bn a year to support and empower millions of people. We're using fresh ideas and leading-edge tech to build and maintain digital solutions that will be used by nearly every person in the UK, every day and at key moments in their lives.
We are significantly growing our Architecture practice at DWP Digital to ensure we have the capability to design contemporary solutions that are not only secure and scalable, but are built using the latest engineering approaches. We are looking to hire nine roles across various functions, working on projects that build modern applications — not the configuration of off-the-shelf systems. You'll be at the heart of designing solutions that meet complex business needs using the most up to date architectural approaches.
Role and responsibilitiesYour role will set architectural direction, create technical options and guidance, and work closely with technical and non-technical stakeholders to ensure the services we build are robust, user-centred and aligned to DWP's broader architecture strategy. You'll have a hands-on influence to high-profile projects, support major initiatives and design the bespoke digital services that millions of citizens rely on.
What skills, knowledge and experience will you need?- Experience designing architecture across on-prem, cloud and hybrid environments, spanning networking, security, presentation, middleware, database and integration components.
- Ability to design using principles, patterns, technical radars, standards and reusable practices that guide teams toward high-quality technical decisions.
- Experience shaping solutions across the full delivery lifecycle; from concept/discovery through to implementation and go-live in agile, waterfall and hybrid environments.
- Skilled at translating business needs into clear, traceable technical designs that stakeholders can understand and confidently support.
- Experience applying architecture modelling techniques and tools to design, communicate and represent complex systems.
- Deep expertise in microservice and API-led architecture, using modern integration techniques, tools and best practice.
- Strong experience with event-based architecture, including pub-sub patterns, data streaming, modelling approaches, standards and tooling - and how these enable modern, scalable bespoke services.
We're hiring nine new Senior Technical Architects across a variety of teams and functions. The projects you'll shape could include (but are not exclusive to) modernising Disability and Living Allowance service for children and families (DLA), building improved services that support older citizens (Pension Credit), or shaping the architecture for user-facing digital journeys across DWP (DM&E).
We're building high-impact digital services, all built using contemporary platforms, tooling and engineering practices. Your expertise in microservices, APIs and event-driven architecture will be central to how we build next-generation digital platforms. We're looking for someone who can provide architectural direction and oversight, ensuring designs are coherent, well-documented and technically sound.
This is a leadership level role so you'll also mentor colleagues, support governance and help teams understand the benefits of modern design patterns, reusable components and cross-government alignment. This is an ideal role for someone who enjoys solving large-scale, often unique, technical challenges and thrives in complex digital environments. You should be motivated by the opportunity to shape the future of public-facing services through robust, modern architecture.
