Your Future Role

We’re looking to recruit a Control Room Technician to join Alstom, a global leader in rolling stock and rail solutions. This is a desk-based role sitting within a team of five, requiring independence and strong technical capability. The successful candidate will provide technical support to customer control room staff while trains are in service, ensuring rapid response to operational issues and maintaining service reliability. This position is ideal for a Rolling Stock Engineer seeking to progress into a control room environment. This role requires flexibility to work across varying rotating shift patterns as follows: 5 days on, 5 days off followed by 4 nights on, 5 days off and then 2 days, 3 nights, and 4 days off.

We’ll Look to You For:

  • Acting as the key interface between customer control room staff and technical support teams.
  • Managing and responding to in-service failures during operational hours.
  • Monitoring live data using ORBITA (a remote condition monitoring system) and AVIS (Alstom Vehicle Information System), detecting potential issues and taking proactive action.
  • Investigating in-service failures remotely using diagnostic tools such as ORBITA, OTMR (On-Train Monitoring Recorder), CCTV, and compiling reports for depot investigations.
  • Creating and managing work orders using MAXIMO (a computerised maintenance management system).
  • Tracking ORBITA alerts for AVIS outputs and integrating AVIS tasks into maintenance schedules using MAXIMO’s dynamic planning functionality.
  • Coordinating responses to in-service failures, providing rapid technical support to customer operations teams.
  • Conducting advanced fault-finding at the depot and providing technical guidance to managers and technicians.

All About You:

We value passion and attitude over experience. While you may not have every skill listed, the following will help you succeed:

  • HNC (or equivalent) in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering (highly desirable).
  • Strong knowledge of EMU (Electric Multiple Unit) systems and rolling stock.
  • Ability to investigate and resolve electrical and mechanical engineering problems.
  • Proven experience in fault-finding and diagnosis on rolling stock systems.
  • Familiarity with computer-based asset management systems for recording and closing work orders.
  • Knowledge of systems such as ORBITA and MAXIMO.
  • IT proficiency, including Excel and Lotus Notes.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work independently.
  • Meticulous record-keeping and attention to detail.

Things you’ll enjoy

Join us on a life-long transformative journey – the rail industry is here to stay, so you can grow and develop new skills and experiences throughout your career. You’ll also:

  • Enjoy stability, challenges and a long-term career free from boring daily routines.
  • Collaborate with transverse teams and helpful colleagues.

  • Up to 52 weeks full maternity and adoption pay.
  • 25 days annual leave plus bank holidays, with the opportunity to buy or sell holidays.
  • Option to enjoy a brand new electric or hybrid vehicle with our salary sacrifice scheme.
  • A wide range of flexible benefits that you can tailor to suit your lifestyle.

You don’t need to be a train enthusiast to thrive with us. We guarantee that when you step onto one of our trains with your friends or family, you’ll be proud. If you’re up for the challenge, we’d love to hear from you!
