We are recruiting a Junior Estimator on behalf of a well-established engineering and fabrication business based on Teesside. Working alongside experienced estimators and reporting to the Proposals Engineer, you will support the preparation of accurate quotations and tender submissions for engineering and fabrication projects. This is an excellent opportunity for someone at the early stages of their career who is keen to develop their technical, commercial and estimating knowledge within a practical engineering environment.
The role involves reviewing customer enquiries, technical drawings and specifications to help establish the material, labour, subcontractor, plant and equipment costs associated with each project. You will work closely with estimating, engineering, production, planning, procurement and supply chain teams, gaining valuable experience in fabrication methods, commercial costing and project delivery.
Key responsibilities include:
- Assisting with the review of customer enquiries, drawings, specifications and scope of work documents
- Learning to interpret engineering and fabrication drawings, bills of materials and technical specifications
- Supporting the preparation of cost estimates for materials, labour, subcontracted services, plant and equipment
- Obtaining and comparing quotations from suppliers and subcontractors
- Assisting with the preparation of tender documents and quotation packages
- Maintaining estimating records, cost databases and quotation registers
- Liaising with internal departments to gather the information required for accurate estimates
- Supporting the development of labour rates, production assumptions and costing models
- Helping to identify technical and commercial risks within tender enquiries
- Participating in project handover meetings following contract awards
- Comparing actual project costs against estimates and identifying lessons learned
- Developing your understanding of fabrication, welding, machining and assembly processes
- Undertaking shop-floor efficiency studies and providing feedback
- Ensuring work complies with company procedures, quality standards and customer specifications
About you:
To be considered for this opportunity, you should have:
- An HNC, HND or equivalent qualification in engineering, manufacturing, construction or a related discipline
- Some experience within an engineering, fabrication or manufacturing environment
- The ability to read and interpret engineering drawings
- Good numerical and analytical skills
- Strong attention to detail
- Competence in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel
- Good communication and organisational skills
- The ability to work effectively as part of a team
- A genuine willingness to develop your technical and commercial knowledge
Knowledge of steel fabrication, welding or Lean Manufacturing would be beneficial, although Lean Manufacturing training will be provided.
