Help keep Kidderminster’s public spaces safe and welcoming

If you enjoy working outdoors and want to make a real difference to Kidderminster’s parks and public spaces, this could be the role for you!

Kidderminster Town Council is looking for a practical, proactive and motivated Operations Technical Officer to join our busy Parks and Public Realm team.

This is a varied and hands-on role, supporting the day-to-day maintenance and development of our parks, play areas and wider public realm. You will play an important role in helping to ensure that our public spaces are safe, well-maintained, attractive and welcoming for residents, visitors and the wider community.

From carrying out inspections of play equipment and public spaces, supporting grounds maintenance activities and supporting contractors, to helping maintain street furniture, facilities and park infrastructure, no two days are likely to be the same.

You will have the opportunity to work across Kidderminster’s parks and public spaces, contributing to their ongoing improvement and ensuring they remain places that people can enjoy, use and take pride in.

If you are someone who is practical, organised, safety-conscious and enjoys working outdoors, and you want to see the tangible results of your work within the community, we would like to hear from you.

About The Role

Reporting to the Deputy Operational Services Manager, you will:

  • Inspect play equipment, surfacing, street furniture and other council assets, recording findings and reporting and repairing defects.
  • Make dangerous equipment safe and carry out repairs, arranging specialist contractor support where needed.
  • Undertake grounds maintenance, including grass cutting, hedge trimming, shrub bed maintenance and litter clearance.
  • Help develop and follow risk assessments, using tools, machinery and vehicles safely.
  • Provide helpful, professional customer service and represent the council positively when working in public spaces.

About You

You will bring practical experience in grounds maintenance or horticulture, hands-on repairs, and undertaking and recording inspections of public assets. Experience of working on highways and maintaining roadside areas is also required.

You will have a working knowledge of health and safety, good communication and record-keeping skills, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team. A flexible approach to duties and working hours is essential.

You must hold a current driving licence with Category C1 entitlement or equivalent, as specified in the person specification, and be willing to undertake training towards relevant industry qualifications.

Operational-level RoSPA/RPII certification, power-tool training, competence with grounds maintenance equipment, and experience working with community groups or volunteers would be advantageous.

Benefits

  • On Site parking
  • Free eye tests
  • Employee assistance programme
  • Reimbursement for flu jab
  • Flexible working pattern
  • Annual appraisals may recognise outstanding performance with a merit award of up to one week’s salary, and relevant additional skills or qualifications through salary progression.
  • A career progression path and relevant training and development provided and funded by the Council
  • Pension and generous annual leave

Closing date: 14th November 2026

Interview date: November-December 2026
