Woking Borough Council is seeking a dedicated Arboricultural Officer to support the Development Management Team in managing tree protection and planning matters across Woking.
Salary: £40,989 – £48,059 (dependent on experience) plus flexible benefits allowance up to £2,313 per annum and vehicle allowance up to £2,683 per annum.
Location: Woking.
Employment type: Permanent, full‑time, 37 hours per week with flexible hours.

Responsibilities
- Assist the Council in meeting corporate objectives and statutory obligations for work affecting trees.
- Process tree protection applications and act as the point of contact for the public.
- Provide expert opinions on tree matters in planning applications, large‑scale projects and appeals, and advise on landscaping proposals.
- Investigate alleged breaches of tree protection legislation and, in liaison with the Legal Service, provide expert witness evidence for prosecutions.
- Create and review Tree Preservation Orders, review old area orders, prepare reports in response to objections, and administer formal complaints under the High Hedges legislation.
About you
- You will hold a recognised arboricultural qualification, such as the Arboricultural Association’s Technician’s Certificate in Arboriculture, and eligibility for membership of the Arboricultural Association.
Qualifications and skills
- Minimum 3 years of post‑qualification experience, including at least 2 years in a professional capacity.
- Thorough knowledge of tree condition assessment, fault diagnosis and safety.
- Understanding of current planning legislation relating to trees and tree issues in construction.
- Excellent written communication skills and the ability to produce clear, concise reports.
- Strong organisational skills and ability to prioritise work and meet deadlines.
- Proficiency in using IT.
