School Governor in Wolverhampton

Overview

City of Wolverhampton Council is recruiting School Governors across various schools. This is a voluntary, unpaid role with a fixed-term appointment of four years from the date of appointment.

Role details

Appointment status: This is a fixed term appointment for four years from the date of appointment.

Hours: Varies with school year; approximately 1 day per half term, including school time and evening engagements (subject to agreement in advance). May be split into several activities.

Salary: This is a voluntary and unpaid appointment.

Role summary

Being a school governor is a challenging but rewarding role. It offers the chance to make a real difference to young people, contribute to the local community, and develop skills in a board-level environment. Governors form part of the largest volunteer force in the country (over a quarter of a million volunteers governing state-funded schools in England). Governing boards need a balance and diversity of knowledge, skills and experience to be effective. Ofsted notes that effective leadership and management includes the governing board.

Governing board responsibilities

• Set the strategic direction of the school
• Hold the Headteacher to account for the educational performance of pupils
• Oversee the financial effectiveness of the school, ensuring money is well spent

Governing board roles and opportunities

The Governing Board has three key roles (as above). You will be able to:

• Use your own experience of education and life outside school to inform conversations
• Develop and utilise your skills in a board-level environment
• Make a valuable contribution to education and your community
• Support and challenge the school so that it improves for pupils and staff
• Bring your unique experiences, perspectives and insights into decision-making in the interests of the school community

Who can apply

Anyone aged over 18 can be a governor. You do not need to be a parent. There is no requirement to have an understanding of the education system—only the necessary skills, character and time to contribute.

There is training available to help you learn about education. Schools benefit from a range of professional knowledge on the governing board, including education, finance, human resources, legal, marketing and public relations, property and estates management, and organisational change.
