Overview
Environmental Services Arboricultural Department undertakes tree work across Wolverhampton, which has a tree stock of approximately 280,000 trees.
The role is responsible for routine and risk‑based inspections, planned and reactive maintenance, and emergency out‑of‑hours call‑out provision.
Key Responsibilities
- Mandate day‑to‑day operational management of in‑house arboricultural teams, tree inspectors, and contractors.
- Implement health and safety best practices and lead the service in meeting statutory and industry standards.
- Allocate resources, make informed decisions and communicate with senior managers, councillors and other stakeholders.
- Lead emergency callout planning and coordination.
- Ensure the application of Quantified Tree Risk Assessment (QTRA) or an equivalent methodology to support defensible tree‑management decisions.
Qualifications and Experience
- Full valid UK driving licence.
- NPTC CS 30, 31a&b, 38, 39; Tree climbing and aerial rescue qualifications.
- In‑depth experience in the arboriculture industry, preferably in the public sector.
- Proven record of managing/supervising arboriculture teams.
- Good communication skills.
- Experience with asset management systems such as Confirm.
- Knowledge of health and safety management, risk assessments and method statements.
- Awareness of legislation relevant to the arboriculture industry.
- Knowledge of contract management.
- In‑depth understanding of arboricultural best practice and industry standards, including BS3998.
- Experience of tendering and procurement processes.
- Knowledge of pests and diseases and ability to assess impact and recommend management.
- Experience in staff line management, attendance management and staff development.
- Ability to make evidence‑based, defensible decisions in relation to tree safety and public risk.
- Ability to manage enquiries, complaints and sensitive issues professionally.
