Market Hall Café and Shop

Our popular café and gift shop serve a wide range of customers, from tourists and families to local residents. The café offers both eat-in and takeaway options, serving Monsoon Estates coffee, speciality Golden Monkey teas and a range of refreshing cold drinks, alongside a selection of cakes, sandwiches, paninis, and more. The adjacent market hall shop sells a varied range of products, including local beekeeper’s honey, fossils and toys, gifts and greeting cards, and souvenirs.

The Role

Working within the Visitor Services team, this role mainly covers our busy café. During opening hours you will be preparing food and drink, serving customers, and promoting our offers, including our best‑selling cream teas. Daily tasks will include:

  • Opening the museum and café for the day
  • Setting up indoor and outdoor café areas
  • Maintaining high standards of cleanliness
  • Receiving and checking deliveries
  • Ensuring all café records are kept accurate and up to date
  • Assisting with closing

Occasionally you will also cover the gift shop, chatting with visitors, helping them find products and recommending items rather than relying solely on till‑based interactions.

Working Pattern

This is a part‑time role working to a set 4‑week rolling work pattern:

  • Week 1 – Wed, Thurs, Fri 09:30‑17:10
  • Week 2 – Tues 09:00‑17:10; Wed, Thurs & Sat 09:30‑17:10
  • Week 3 – Tues 09:00‑17:10; Wed, Thurs & Sat 09:30‑17:10
  • Week 4 – Wed, Thurs, Fri 09:30‑17:10; Saturday 11:00‑16:00

The Candidate

This role is well suited to someone who is confident working within a team and independently, with a practical, flexible approach. You will enjoy speaking to customers and delivering excellent customer service. We’re looking for someone with experience working in a customer‑service environment. Good levels of numeracy and literacy are essential.

Additional Information

The Fluency Duty is outlined in the Code of Practice on the English language requirements for public sector workers. The Fluency Duty for this role is required: you must be able to speak and provide advice in accurate spoken English to the public.
