We have an exciting opportunity for a dynamic and experienced finance professional: the Senior Accountant – Financial Strategy role within the Strategic Finance team. About The Role
£48,226 to £50,269 plus an additional £4,500 per annum. This role is critical to continuing our high performance, working with senior leaders at the heart of strategic decision‑making to deliver a complex portfolio of work. The ideal candidate will be professional, enthusiastic and ready for a new challenge to help us take our team and processes to the next level. You will be a qualified accountant with substantial post‑qualification experience in a similar role.
Playing a central role in the Finance Service, you’ll join the Financial Strategy team (reporting to the Finance Manager – Financial Strategy) and help co‑ordinate and deliver the Council’s annual budget and Medium‑Term Financial Strategy (MTFS). You will support the detailed build, refresh and maintenance of the MTFS and medium‑term resource plan, review service spending plans, pressures and savings delivery, and ensure the organisation stays on top of key corporate funding streams (council tax, business rates and government grant income).
You will provide high‑quality strategic and technical financial advice to senior stakeholders, supporting the Head of Strategic Finance, the Director of Finance and Corporate Board on all aspects of financial planning and management. The role includes co‑ordinating and producing in‑year revenue budget monitoring (including reports to Corporate Board, Cabinet and other committees), producing robust financial tables and reconciliations to underpin reporting, calculating and agreeing authority‑wide inflation allocations (pay and non‑pay), ensuring revenue budget uploads and reconciliations to corporate control totals are managed effectively, contributing to corporate financial risk and reserves work, and completing statutory returns and other corporate finance tasks relevant to the role.
Key Responsibilities

- Provide clear strategic advice and influence senior decisions across the Council.
- Co‑ordinate and produce the Council’s annual budget and MTFS.
- Produce robust financial tables, reconciliations and reports for Corporate Board and Cabinet.
- Calculate and agree authority‑wide inflation allocations (pay and non‑pay).
- Ensure effective revenue budget uploads and reconciliations to corporate control totals.
- Contribute to corporate financial risk, reserves work and statutory returns.
Key Requirements / Qualifications
- Qualified and experienced finance professional with post‑qualification experience in a similar role.
- Deliver MTFS refresh and in‑year revenue monitoring/reporting outputs.
- Provide clear strategic advice and influence senior decisions across the Council.
- Maintain corporate funding and inflation assumptions to support robust forecasts.
- Maintain strong controls (reconciliations, statutory returns, reserves/risk) and improve processes.
