Occupational Therapy Assistant in Warwick

The Occupational Therapy (OT) Team within Adult Social Care at Warwickshire County Council supports adults, carers and families across Warwickshire to live as safely and independently as possible. The team works alongside people in their own homes and communities to understand what matters to them, identify strengths and barriers, and agree practical, proportionate solutions that promote wellbeing, choice, dignity and independence.

The OT Team is made up of Occupational Therapists and other skilled practitioners who complete strengths-based assessments with Warwickshire residents. The team considers the person, their environment, routines, roles and support networks, and may recommend equipment, minor adaptations, moving and handling advice, reablement approaches, housing-related solutions or referrals to partner services where this will prevent, reduce or delay the need for ongoing care and support. The team is committed to delivering timely, person-centred and prevention-focused occupational therapy interventions.

Our aim is to support people to maintain independence, manage risk positively, access their home and community environments, and achieve outcomes that are meaningful to them. Our practice is informed by the Social Model of Disability, recognising that people are often disabled by environmental, social, communication and attitudinal barriers rather than by impairment alone. In line with the Care Act 2014, we focus on wellbeing, prevention, personal outcomes and promoting independence, working with people to identify how barriers can be reduced or removed wherever possible.

We are now recruiting for an Occupational Therapy Assistant to join the OT Team within Adult Social Care at Warwickshire County Council. The post will be based in the south of the county, although there is an expectation that you will work countywide should the service require you to. The post is full time, 37 hours per week.

Joining our established South OT Team within Adult Social Care, you’ll be based in South Warwickshire. You will support the delivery of proportionate occupational therapy interventions, working under the guidance and supervision of registered Occupational Therapists. You will work directly with adults, carers and families, both in their homes helping people find practical solutions such as equipment, assistive technology, minor adaptations and alternative ways of completing everyday activities that enable them to remain safe, independent and connected to their communities.

No two days are the same. You may be gathering assessment information, supporting equipment provision, undertaking reviews, working alongside health and social care colleagues, or helping to identify solutions that prevent the need for ongoing support. You will work closely with Occupational Therapists, Social Care colleagues, operational teams, health partners, housing services, equipment providers and other agencies to support practical solutions that promote independence, reduce risk and improve wellbeing. This may include supporting assessments, arranging and reviewing equipment, assisting with minor adaptations, gathering information, and contributing to person-centred plans under supervision. You’ll take part in formal and informal supervision and team meetings. In addition, you will be expected to provide support to the wider team as necessary.

Key Requirements

To be successful in this role, you will need relevant experience of working with adults, carers or families in a health, social care, community or related setting. You will have an interest in occupational therapy practice within Adult Social Care and an understanding of person-centred and strengths-based approaches, positive risk management, equipment, minor adaptations, prevention and promoting independence. You will not need to be a registered Occupational Therapist, but you will need to be able to work safely within agreed procedures, seek advice when required and carry out delegated work under the guidance and supervision of registered Occupational Therapists.

You will also have an awareness of the Care Act 2014 and its principles, including wellbeing, prevention, proportionality, personal outcomes and the duty to prevent, reduce or delay needs for care and support. An understanding of the Social Model of Disability is important, including recognising how environmental, social, communication and attitudinal barriers can affect a person’s independence, participation and access to daily life.

As you’ll be managing relationships with a variety of people, it’s important you have strong communication skills, can creatively solve problems and plan your own workload, often working under pressure. With the ability to work within a team as well as on your own initiative, you’ll have experience of dealing with and maintaining confidential information and an understanding of equality and diversity, ensuring all people are treated fairly and with respect. It is important that you are flexible in your approach to work. The role is based in the South of the county and you will travel across the county as the service requires. In addition, you will demonstrate your commitment to learning and development.
