Walsall Council is seeking an Environmental Driver LGV (Casual) to support front line services across the borough. This is a varied role, where you may work across waste, street cleansing, and grounds maintenance depending on service needs.

Typical duties include:

  • Domestic waste and recycling collections, including assisted collections, seasonal garden waste, bin deliveries, and removal of bagged waste where needed.
  • Commercial waste and recycling collections.
  • Street cleansing work such as litter picking, bulky waste, fly-tipping clearance, and supporting mechanical sweeping and other cleaning tasks.
  • Grounds maintenance support such as grass cutting, hedge work, and other outdoor operations (including cemetery work where required).

You’ll help plan the day’s work, including route order and round scheduling, to ensure jobs are completed safely, efficiently, and on time.

Driving, Safety, and Vehicle Standards

You’ll be expected to work to high safety and driving standards at all times, including safe driving on busy roads and estates and working around pedestrians and vulnerable road users. You’ll operate and use a range of equipment depending on the task, such as hoists, tail lifts, reversing aids, and other tools and machinery used in environmental services. Looking after the vehicle is part of the role, including:

  • Completing daily walkaround checks before and after use.
  • Reporting defects promptly and clearly.
  • Keeping the vehicle clean, fuelled, and roadworthy.

You’ll also complete the usual records linked to the work, such as timesheets, defect reports, tachograph requirements, and any job or incident documentation.

Casual Hours – How It Works

This is a casual role, which means your hours are flexible and based on service demand. Work will be offered across Monday to Sunday, including early starts, and shifts may vary week to week. You may be asked to cover:

  • Short-notice absences and seasonal peaks.
  • Weekend or Bank Holiday working when required.
  • Busy periods where extra crews are needed to keep services running.

There is no fixed weekly rota, but you’ll be told your shifts in line with operational need. This suits someone who can be flexible and is happy to work different days and times when work is available.

About You

We’re looking for someone who is reliable, safe, and customer-focused, with:

  • A full driving licence with Category C (minimum).
  • Driver CPC (DQC card holder).
  • NVQ Level 2, or equivalent practical experience in waste/recycling, street cleansing, or grounds maintenance.
  • Good health and safety awareness and confidence working outdoors in all weathers.
  • Clear communication and a team approach.
  • A professional attitude with residents, colleagues, and supervisors.
