Millbrook Primary School is seeking a dedicated, compassionate and enthusiastic Level 2 Teaching Assistant to work within our KS1 or KS2 team, supporting pupils with social, emotional and mental health needs, including those who may have experienced trauma. This is a rewarding opportunity to make a meaningful difference to children’s wellbeing, resilience and access to learning.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide targeted support to pupils to enable full access to learning experiences, with a strong focus on emotional regulation and engagement.
  • Support pupils in developing positive relationships, self-esteem and resilience.
  • Implement individual education and support plans, including EHCPs and personalised provision, in collaboration with the class teacher and SENDCo.
  • Use trauma-informed and nurturing approaches to support behaviour, emotional regulation and wellbeing.
  • Adapt activities and learning environments to meet the individual needs of pupils.
  • Support pupils during unstructured times (e.g. transitions, playtimes), where SEMH needs may be heightened.
  • Promote a safe, calm and inclusive classroom environment where all pupils feel understood and supported.
  • Monitor, record and report on pupils’ progress, behaviour and emotional development.
  • Work closely with staff, parents/carers and external professionals (e.g. counsellors, educational psychologists) to provide consistent support.
  • Follow school policies on safeguarding, child protection, behaviour and wellbeing at all times.
  • Contribute to the wider life of the school, including enrichment activities and pastoral support initiatives.

We’re Looking for Someone Who

  • Has experience working with children with SEMH needs or who have experienced trauma.
  • Demonstrates a nurturing, patient and empathetic approach to supporting children.
  • Has an understanding of trauma-informed practice and inclusive strategies (training can be provided).
  • Is confident managing and supporting challenging behaviour in a calm and consistent manner.
  • Can build strong, trusting relationships with pupils to help them feel safe and valued.
  • Is resilient, flexible and able to respond to pupils’ changing emotional needs throughout the day.
  • Works effectively as part of a team and communicates well with colleagues and families.
  • Is committed to supporting every child to achieve their full potential, both academically and emotionally.

Qualifications and Experience

  • A relevant qualification (e.g. Level 2 Teaching Assistant) is desirable.
  • A good standard of education, including GCSE English and Maths (Grade C/4 or equivalent).
  • Experience working with children in an educational or care setting is essential.
  • Experience supporting children with SEMH or trauma-related needs is highly desirable, though training will be provided.
  • A strong commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children is essential.
