About The Role
Be at the heart of leadership, integrity, and strategic decision-making. Telford College is seeking an exceptional Governance Professional to play a pivotal leadership role at the centre of our organisation. This is a rare opportunity to influence the strategic direction, integrity, and effectiveness of governance within a forward-thinking Further Education college. As a trusted advisor to the Chair, Corporation, and Executive Leadership Team, you will champion governance excellence, ensuring the College operates with transparency, accountability, and full regulatory compliance.
As governance professional, you will act as the independent authority on governance, providing expert advice and leadership across all aspects of corporate governance. You will ensure the Corporation meets its statutory responsibilities while enabling high-quality decision-making that drives our strategic mission forward. As a Senior Post Holder and key member of the leadership “Triumvirate”, your influence will be integral in shaping governance frameworks, strengthening oversight, and embedding best practice across the College. This role is a term time only role (39 weeks).

Key Responsibilities
- Governance Leadership
- Provide independent, authoritative advice to the Chair, Corporation and Committees
- Lead and continuously improve governance frameworks, policies and practices
- Ensure compliance with legal, regulatory and statutory requirements
- Oversee governance risk, assurance and accountability frameworks
- Lead governance self‑assessment, improvement planning and external review readiness
- Act as Whistleblowing Officer and custodian of the Common Seal
- Board & Committee Excellence
- Act as Clerk to the Corporation, ensuring lawful and effective conduct of business
- Plan and manage governance cycles, meetings, agendas and documentation
- Produce high‑quality minutes, reports and briefing papers
- Enable robust, transparent and informed decision‑making
- Governance Operations & Development
- Lead governor recruitment, induction, training and development
- Maintain statutory registers and governance records
- Drive digital improvements in governance systems and processes
- Promote strong engagement between governance and stakeholders
- Ensure governors are fully equipped to fulfil their roles
Skills & Expertise
- Significant experience in governance, compliance or board‑level advisory roles
- Strong understanding of regulatory frameworks (ideally within FE, education or public sector)
- Outstanding communication skills, with the ability to influence and challenge constructively
- High levels of professional judgement, discretion and independence
- A passion for governance excellence, transparency and continuous improvement
Qualifications & Training
- Level 2 English and Maths
- Relevant degree or equivalent qualification (Desirable)
- Governance professional qualification (e.g. CGI) or willingness to attain qualifications (Desirable)
