About The Role
The Sixth Form Careers Adviser will play a key role in supporting Telford 6th’s commitment to student success, employability, higher education (HE) progression and positive student outcomes.
This is a proactive, target-focused role, with the postholder responsible for ensuring that careers activity contributes to the successful achievement of contractual key performance indicators (KPIs) and performance targets.
As the new Sixth Form develops, the Careers Adviser will contribute to the strategic design and delivery of a comprehensive careers development programme that meets and exceeds the Gatsby Benchmarks and aligns with the College’s ambition to raise the aspirations, achievement and future opportunities of all students.
The postholder will build positive and trusted relationships with students, providing engaging careers guidance, support programmes and outreach activities that encourage participation, build confidence and support personal development.
They will work closely with students to help them identify and achieve their career and progression goals, while effectively monitoring engagement and outcomes to support positive destinations.
A key aspect of the role will be developing strong partnerships between Telford 6th and a wide range of external organisations, including employers, universities, charities and other key stakeholders.
Through these partnerships, the Careers Adviser will create meaningful opportunities for students to develop their employability skills, broaden their horizons and make informed decisions about their next steps.
Key Responsibilities
- Support the successful delivery of the Sixth Form Careers Development strategy and contribute to its design and development.
- Maintain records and feedback for the programme to measure effectiveness of the programme and enable reflection and improvement year on year.
- Ensure Gatsby Requirements are met or exceeded, to include one-to-one personal guidance meetings for all Year 12 students.
- Support the design and delivery of a structured timetable of activities, including workshops, job clubs or other sessions.
- Collaborate with academic teams to integrate employability and career development activities across programmes.
- Give high-quality impartial advice and guidance to individuals and groups of students on matters relating to intended destinations including HE Student Finance, employment, Higher Education including competitive entry courses, Degree Apprenticeships and Sponsored Degree programmes, study abroad, training and other progression options including gap year.
- Arrange and deliver one-to-one career meetings and create personalised action plans to help students achieve their career goals
- Monitor, evaluate and report on careers guidance outcomes, Gatsby Benchmark performance, student engagement and destination data, providing regular reports to senior leaders to support strategic planning and continuous improvement.
- The Sixth Form Careers Adviser will positively and proactively engage with all Six th Form students to support career learning, ensure inclusivity and address each student’s needs.
- Contribute to the planning and delivery of a programme of internal and external careers and progression events on campus and coordinate students’ attendance at these events.
- Be a named UCAS Centre Coordinator for applications from students on Six th Form programmes, managing outgoing UCAS applications and associated procedures, liaising with tutors and support staff (eg for references).
- Contribute to the design and ensure the implementation of a pro‑active work experience programme for Six th Form students that will develop their career learning and enhance their employability and support any requirements for the student’s next steps (eg placements for Nursing students).
Skills & Expertise
- Experience delivering one-to-one guidance sessions
- Experience delivering group sessions
- Experience engaging with employers, charities or other stakeholders
- Experience of managing own workload to meet conflicting demands and deadlines
- Ability to maintain detailed and accurate records
- Ability to use current Windows based packages including Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and Power Point
- Experience in an educational setting
- Experience of organising and leading student visits to universities, work places and careers events.
- Experience organising careers, employability or employer engagement activities.
- Experience delivering whole school programmes
- Experience designing and creating career learning materials and resources
Qualifications & Training
- Level 6 Diploma in Career Guidance and Advice or other relevant degree qualification.
- High standard of literacy and numeracy
- A life-long learning attitude towards continued development and training in careers based workshops, courses and qualifications
