Shropshire Council is seeking a skilled and compassionate individual to join their team as a Handyperson. This role is vital in enhancing the safety and energy efficiency of homes for local residents. You will collaborate with two specialized teams to deliver essential maintenance services that significantly contribute to the wellbeing of the community.

What you'll do

• Carry out a variety of home repairs and modifications aimed at improving warmth and energy efficiency in residential properties.
• Install security features such as locks and alarms to enhance the safety of residents in their homes.
• Execute physical tasks that align with the goals of both the AWEE and DAPT teams, ensuring that residents receive the support they need.
• Engage with residents in a clear and respectful manner to explain the necessary improvements and repairs being undertaken.
• Conduct assessments of homes to identify areas that require maintenance or upgrades, prioritizing the needs of vulnerable individuals.
• Maintain accurate records of work completed, including repairs and installations, to ensure transparency and accountability.
• Collaborate with other team members and departments to coordinate efforts and share best practices for home maintenance.
• Stay updated on the latest techniques and regulations related to home repairs, energy efficiency, and safety standards.
• Provide feedback and suggestions for improvements in service delivery based on your experiences in the field.
• Participate in training sessions and workshops to enhance your skills and knowledge relevant to the role.
• Assist in the development of community outreach programs aimed at educating residents about energy efficiency and home safety.
• Support the overall mission of Shropshire Council by promoting a safe and comfortable living environment for all residents.

Requirements

• Demonstrated experience in performing manual repairs and general property maintenance tasks.
• Ability to work sensitively with vulnerable individuals, understanding their unique needs and circumstances.
• Willingness to travel to various residential locations across the region as required.
• Strong commitment to adhering to safety and security protocols established by the council.
• Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, to effectively interact with residents and team members.
• Problem-solving skills to address unexpected challenges that may arise during maintenance tasks.

Nice to have

• Previous experience in a similar role within a community-focused organization.
• Knowledge of energy efficiency measures and best practices for home improvements.
• Familiarity with basic security hardware and installation techniques.
• Certification or training in home repair or maintenance.
• Experience working with vulnerable populations, particularly in a support or care capacity.

Skills & tools

• Proficiency in general home maintenance and repair techniques, including plumbing, electrical work, and carpentry.
• Knowledge of energy efficiency equipment and installation methods, such as insulation and energy-efficient appliances.
• Basic skills in fitting security hardware, including locks and alarm systems.
• Familiarity with tools and equipment commonly used in home repair and maintenance tasks.
