The Council is looking for an experienced officer to lead its Commercial Practices Team. The successful candidate will lead a team of around half a dozen officers focusing mainly on fair trading activities, particularly those linked to public health such as underage sales and illicit tobacco. Rogue trading and tackling other organised criminal activities also fall to this team, although all officers across the service are expected to contribute to routine work like inspection and sampling in areas such as food standards.

You should be an experienced investigator with considerable experience of fair trading work and some experience of handling larger investigations. Experience of working with businesses under the Primary Authority provisions would also be helpful as the service is keen to support local businesses and already has several agreements in place. Previous supervisory experience would be desirable as you will lead a small team dealing with day‑to‑day management issues, overseeing their work and driving investigative activities.

You will work with colleagues delivering activities through the tasking allocation process and be expected to assess submissions and agree activities for your team before supervising the tasked work through to fruition. To be successful you should also be able to deal with a wide range of different customers and stakeholders, as we are looking to engage with a wide range of partners. Modern Trading Standards work requires good relationships with a wide range of bodies and we will ask the successful candidate to maintain some of those and engage with regional specialist groups in areas relevant to the Commercial Practices team.

Qualifications

The Diploma in Trading Standards or its equivalent is essential for the post. Experience of working with primary authority provisions and previous supervisory experience are desirable.

Equality & Diversity

The County Council is committed to equality of opportunity for all citizens and celebrates the diversity of all its residents.
