Sandwell Council’s Place Division is seeking an experienced Street Lighting Ganger to join its Highways team on a full-time, permanent basis, to be based from its Oldbury Depot.

As a Street Lighting Ganger, you will play a key role in maintaining and improving Sandwell's street lighting and illuminated street infrastructure, helping to keep residents, motorists and visitors safe. Leading a team of operatives, you will coordinate and undertake the installation, inspection, maintenance and repair of street lighting columns, illuminated signs and associated electrical equipment across the borough. Working within Highway Services, you will ensure all work is completed safely, efficiently and in compliance with relevant legislation, while supporting service delivery targets and providing technical guidance to colleagues. This is a hands‑on leadership role that combines electrical expertise, people supervision and a commitment to delivering high‑quality services to the community.

About The Role

• Lead and supervise a team of Street Lighting Operatives, ensuring work is completed safely and efficiently.
• Carry out the installation, maintenance, repair and replacement of street lighting columns, illuminated signs and associated electrical equipment.
• Coordinate daily workloads, resources, vehicles, plant and materials to achieve service targets.
• Provide technical advice and support to colleagues on all aspects of street lighting work.
• Undertake electrical inspection, testing and fault‑finding activities using specialist equipment.
• Inspect, repair and maintain illuminated and non‑illuminated street furniture and associated assets.
• Drive and operate specialist vehicles and plant, including hydraulic platforms, crane vehicles and other highway maintenance equipment.
• Implement temporary traffic management, road closures, signing, lighting and guarding arrangements.
• Respond to emergency callouts and make safe damaged or dangerous highway assets.
• Maintain accurate records, inventories and work management information systems.
• Build effective relationships with colleagues, contractors, statutory authorities and members of the public.
• Promote a strong health and safety culture and ensure compliance with safe systems of work.
• Participate in emergency and winter standby arrangements as required.
• Support continuous improvement initiatives and contribute to the effective operation of the Street Lighting service.

About You

• Hold a Level 3 Electrotechnical qualification or equivalent relevant electrical installation qualification.
• Have demonstrable experience in the installation, maintenance, fault finding and repair of street lighting and associated electrical equipment.
• Possess experience of leading, supervising or mentoring teams within a street lighting, highways or electrical environment.
• Have a sound understanding of electrical installation principles, street lighting systems and industry best practice.
• Be knowledgeable in health and safety legislation and safe working practices within the public highway.
• Demonstrate strong organisational skills with the ability to coordinate workloads and resources effectively.
• Be confident making decisions, solving problems and responding to operational challenges.
• Communicate effectively with customers, colleagues, contractors and other stakeholders.
• Be able to remain calm under pressure and professionally resolve customer queries and complaints.
• Be comfortable using mobile technology and electronic work management systems.
• Demonstrate a commitment to excellent customer service and continuous improvement.

• Hold a current full driving licence.
• Be willing to undertake further training and development to support your career progression and service needs.
