Staffordshire County Council, Staffordshire Emergency Duty Service (EDS) operates outside normal office hours, providing statutory social work support for both children and adults. We are seeking 1 x full-time Emergency Duty Service Call Taker to join our team and provide a professional response to all initial contacts from service users and external agencies, ensuring appropriate action is taken.

Working hours: Monday to Friday: 5:00 PM – 8:00 AM; Weekends and Bank Holidays: 24-hour cover on a rota basis.

Responsibilities:

  • Acting as the first point of contact for all initial referrals, gathering information calmly and sensitively from members of the public and professionals to enable informed decisions.
  • Completing initial referral records to the highest standards, ensuring timely communication with relevant professionals and service users, and acknowledging referrals in writing within 24 hours.
  • Updating client information systems and maintaining accurate electronic social care records.
  • Conducting checks of historical information and working with the Team Manager or Coordinator to determine the most appropriate course of action based on eligibility criteria.
  • Providing accurate information to assist service users or professionals when referrals do not meet criteria for further assessment.
  • Supporting social work staff during visits and assessments when required, including standby social workers.

The Ideal Candidate:

  • Excellent communication skills – you’ll interact with a wide range of people across the organisation and externally via phone, email, and in person.
  • Strong organisational ability and attention to detail – essential for maintaining accurate records and meeting deadlines.
  • Flexibility and adaptability skills – the nature of emergency work means priorities can change quickly, so you’ll need to manage tasks effectively under pressure.
  • Commitment to delivering outstanding service – ensuring every interaction is professional and supportive.
  • Availability to work required hours – 5:00 PM to 8:00 AM Monday–Friday, plus 24-hour cover on a rota basis for weekends and bank holidays.

Additional Information:

This role is based at Lindum House, a Staffordshire Police building. All non-police personnel are subject to NPPV (Non-Police Personnel Vetting). Successful candidates must complete an NPPV form before any formal offer of employment.
