Birmingham City Council is recruiting 10 Early Support Workers to join the AREA SENCo Team within Early Years Inclusion Support (EYIS). This is an exciting opportunity to make a real difference to the lives of young children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) across Birmingham.

About the Role

  • Support the learning and development of early years children with SEND, including transitions into settings.
  • Work directly with setting‑based SENCos, practitioners, children and families.
  • Assess children’s strengths and needs through observation, discussion and developmental profiles.
  • Model high‑quality teaching, play and learning strategies to support individual educational plans.
  • Assist settings to write and review Individual Education Plans (IEPs) and identify appropriate targets.
  • Build strong partnership relationships with parents/carers and multi‑agency professionals.
  • Deliver workshops to empower early years staff and families.
  • Keep accurate, concise and objective records in line with statutory and service requirements.
  • Contribute to a coordinated Team Around the Child (TAC) approach.

This role is central to improving early identification, inclusion and outcomes for young children with SEND across Birmingham.

About You

  • Strong experience implementing the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) for children with SEND.
  • Experience working collaboratively with parents, carers, settings and external agencies.
  • Knowledge of early child development, the SEND Code of Practice and safeguarding legislation.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to respond flexibly and sensitively to individual needs.
  • Strong organisational skills, with the ability to plan and manage your own workload and meet deadlines.
  • Confidence using Microsoft Office and maintaining accurate records.
  • A reflective, motivated and proactive approach to professional development.
  • You will be committed to promoting inclusion, equality and positive outcomes for all children.
