East Staffordshire Borough Council is seeking a compassionate, organised and respectful Cemetery Officer to support the day-to-day operations of our cemeteries, helping to deliver dignified, professional burial services and maintain cemeteries as peaceful places of remembrance for families and visitors, ensuring services are delivered smoothly, lawfully and with care.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee burials and ensure they meet statutory legal requirements.
  • Process burial paperwork and maintain accurate burial records.
  • Support daily cemetery operations, often working independently but in collaboration with the Cemetery and wider Open Spaces teams.
  • Assist in locating a relative’s grave and provide guidance on burial paperwork.
  • Monitor contractor performance to ensure the cemetery’s visual appearance is of the highest standard.
  • Handle sensitive information and situations with discretion and care.
  • Communicate effectively with teams, partners, and visitors; basic office and word processing skills are advantageous.
  • Occasionally oversee weekday evening burials and provide cover for the on-call weekend rota.
  • Subject to probation, there is an opportunity to complete a formal qualification in Cemetery management.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Full, valid driving licence is essential.
  • Ability to work on your own with initiative and demonstrate good communication skills.
  • Experience in a team and in handling contractors is desirable; knowledge of working with partner agencies is beneficial.
  • Comfort handling sensitive information and situations.
  • Basic office and word processing skills.
