Birmingham Virtual School is seeking experienced and highly motivated individuals with training and qualifications in the teaching of children and young people aged 5–16 years to take on the leadership role of an Area Education Officer working directly to support schools with the education of children known to social care.

The Officers will join a team of seven existing officers to grow the service to support the developing work of the Families First Programme and the developing team around the school locality working in Birmingham. This is a strategic and outward‑facing role, responsible for promoting the educational outcomes for children with a social worker so that attendance, attainment, well‑being and progress are held in high regard.

You will work closely with our young people, their families, school senior leaders, designated teachers, SENCOs, Designated Safeguarding leads, social care colleagues and other education professionals to ensure attainment gaps are closed and the potential of each of our young people is met or exceeded whilst their individual learning needs are met.

Key Skills and Experience
  • Significant experience in teaching across a range of 5–16 settings.
  • Understanding of the educational landscape and legislation for children in care, previously looked‑after children and those known to social care.
  • Experience of delivering against strategic priorities and plans.
  • Confidence in communicating complex information clearly to a wide range of audiences.
  • Strong strategic planning, evaluation and reporting skills.
  • Highly organised, collaborative, and able to work across professional boundaries.
