West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA) is looking for an experienced Technical Writer to shape how corporate systems are documented and understood. The role involves creating and maintaining high‑quality technical documentation that supports critical systems and informs technical design decisions across the organisation. This is a fixed‑term contract until 28 February 2027, based at 16 Summer Lane, Birmingham, B16 3SD, with at least two days per week in the office.
Responsibilities
- Produce high quality technical documentation to support critical systems.
- Research and gather technical information.
- Present and test understanding of technical documents to end users.
- Collaborate with developers, business analysts, infrastructure engineers and other technical specialists to ensure understanding.
- Maintain the central documentation repository and ensure alignment with industry and organisational standards.
- Shape and influence supplier‑provided materials, driving continuous improvements to documentation processes to enhance usability, accessibility and stakeholder experience.
- Use at least two of the following areas: Information and Data Management, Security, Application Management, ERP systems, CRM systems, Networking and Microsoft Solutions.
- Employ analytical mindset with strong problem‑solving skills.
- Build outstanding relationships with end users, exceeding expectations through excellent customer service, communication and presentation skills.
Essential Qualifications
- Experience communicating complex IT designs in business terms to internal and external decision makers.
- Identify opportunities, costs, issues and risks for business stakeholders and make recommendations.
- Effectively manage a technical documentation library and advise users across all user groups.
- Develop, own, deliver and support technical designs and documents for the WMCA.
- Translate business problems into technical designs and documents.
- Iteratively create technical documents aligning user needs with system requirements and organisational objectives.
- Document systems with managed levels of risk, manageable business and technical complexity and meaningful impact, using appropriate patterns.
- Ensure all key processes are documented, owned and embed a culture of continuous service improvement.
