This is a permanent position that requires a formal evaluation under the Pay Equity Review. Work schedule: 8 hours per week, Saturday only, part of rota including weekends and bank holidays, typically working early mornings or late evenings.

The Security Officer assists the Library of Birmingham in providing a service to the public, staff, and visitors, operating 24/7.

Responsibilities include:
  • Maintaining both physical and procedural security.
  • Acting as the main point of contact for day‑to‑day security issues.
  • Resolving issues and management requests in a timely manner.
  • Using initiative to improve customer experience.
  • Monitoring life safety systems.
  • Operating the Fire Evacuation lift in emergency.
  • Enforcing the Libraries and Museums Act 1964 byelaws.
  • Following library policy and council procedures.
  • Working in the Control Room operating CCTV, fire and intruder alarm, lift control, and other software systems.
  • Being computer literate and entering data into the computer, preparing reports.
  • Aware of counter‑terrorism issues, mitigation measures, and PROTECT duty (Martyn’s Law).
  • Opening and closing the building.
  • Digitally recording incidents.
  • Completing regular patrols.
  • Monitoring CCTV and working as a team to provide a safe environment for library users.
  • Performing dynamic risk assessments and using problem‑solving skills to resolve issues, liaising with management as required.
Qualifications & Requirements:
  • First‑aid certification.
  • Security Industry Authority (SIA) licence (CCTV licence desirable).
  • Computer literacy and ability to enter data and write reports.
