West Midlands Fire Service (WMFS) is the second largest fire and rescue service in England, serving an area of 902 km² and a population of over 2.9 million people. ‘Our Strategy’ drives the people, professionalism and pride with which we serve our communities. An exciting opportunity has arisen to manage our Prevention Support Team, leading the Support Officers and Bookings Team, alongside colleagues in Development & Improvement and Delivery.
The successful candidate will demonstrate extensive experience of leading, managing, and developing people, fostering a positive working environment. In this busy role you will be responsible for performance of your team, prioritising, planning, allocating work, and ensuring alignment with ‘Our Strategy’ and the Community Risk Management Plan (CRMP). You will contribute to making the West Midlands safer, stronger and healthier by implementing changes to improve service delivery for partnerships, prevention activities, and education programmes. You will ensure changes align with Government legislation, statutory guidance, NFCC guidance, local authority campaigns, organisational policy, and emerging trends.
Key to success will be ability to work collaboratively, developing and maintaining strong professional relationships with the team, Prevention and Leadership Team, Operations, and a range of internal and external stakeholders.
Responsibilities
- Provide leadership, line management, support, direction, and development opportunities for the team.
- Allocate, manage, and report on workstreams ensuring completion within agreed timescales.
- Manage performance and contribution to performance management processes.
- Manage capacity, capability, attendance, risks, assumptions, issues, dependencies, and partnership opportunities.
- Manage budgets and maintain strategic relationships with partners.
- Ensure policies, processes, practices, guidance, and systems meet high standards, comply with legislation, minimise environmental impact, and serve diverse community needs.
Essential Qualifications and Experience
- Line management experience; ability to plan and prioritise own workload and that of others.
- Strategic and operational decision-making experience.
- Self-motivated, persistent, and able to influence others to adopt new initiatives.
- Highly developed interpersonal and communication skills, excellent verbal and written communication.
- Ability to write and design policies in line with strategic objectives.
- Experience writing funding bids, Service Level Agreements, and partnership documentation.
- Analytical skills to interpret complex data and develop policies; experience providing critical analysis and recommendations.
- Experience networking, partnership development, management, and evaluation.
Desirable
- Management qualification and/or considerable experience managing a professional function.
- Good knowledge of relevant national strategies, legislation, and initiatives.
- Project management qualifications and/or considerable experience in project management.
