Do you have practical skills in maintenance, repair, and a passion for ensuring safe and high‑quality play spaces for children and families? We are looking to recruit a number of Playground Technicians to join Birmingham’s Parks and Play Service. You will play a key role in the inspection, maintenance and repair of playgrounds and associated park infrastructure across the city, helping to ensure our play spaces are safe, compliant and well maintained.
Working under the direction of the Parks and Play Technical Officer, you will deliver routine and reactive maintenance, carry out safety inspections, and undertake repairs to playground equipment and park furniture in line with relevant European Standards and RPII Operational Inspection guidance. As part of a skilled and supportive team, you will contribute directly to the safety, quality and enjoyment of Birmingham’s playgrounds, working both on‑site and in workshop environments in all weather conditions.
Key Responsibilities- Carrying out playground inspections in line with RPII Operational Inspection standards and agreed service schedules
- Identifying and undertaking repairs to playground equipment and park infrastructure to ensure safety and compliance
- Completing risk assessments and ensuring all work is delivered safely in accordance with health and safety legislation and service policies
- Using and maintaining tools, machinery and equipment, including access platforms, lifting devices and workshop tools
- Carrying out repairs and maintenance of safety surfacing, playground equipment and park furniture in all weather conditions
- Undertaking painting, graffiti removal and general refurbishment works across play areas and associated sites
- Supporting stock control and materials management in collaboration with the Parks and Play Technical Officer
- Ensuring vehicles, tools and machinery are maintained and used in accordance with manufacturer specifications
- Completing all required documentation, inspection records and reporting systems accurately and on time
- Supporting emergency and reactive repairs, which may include occasional out of hours working when required
- Working collaboratively with colleagues to identify faults, risks and site issues and ensuring appropriate action is taken
- Supporting the safe installation and maintenance of playground equipment and water safety measures where required
- Contributing to a culture of safety, professionalism, and continuous improvement across playground services
You will bring practical experience in a trade, engineering, construction, fabrication or similar hands‑on environment, along with the ability to work safely and effectively in outdoor and physically demanding conditions. You should be confident using tools and equipment, working to technical standards and interpreting instructions, drawings or specifications. An understanding of health and safety in operational environments is essential, along with the ability to work as part of a team and respond professionally to public‑facing situations when required. A full driving licence is required. Training and development opportunities will be provided, including RPII inspection training and other relevant qualifications.
This is an important frontline role helping to ensure Birmingham’s playgrounds are safe, engaging and well maintained for the thousands of children and families who use them every day. You will play a direct role in supporting the quality, safety and enjoyment of the city’s parks and open spaces.
