Birmingham City Council is looking to recruit 2 Accredited Financial Investigators to join their busy and expanding Financial Investigation Team. The team provides a proactive financial investigation service to Trading Standards, the England Illegal Money Lending Team and other internal and external partners.

The roles will be hybrid working (predominantly home based, with some travel required to attend court hearings, undertake enquiries, participate in office-based work and to assist investigators on enforcement visits). One vacancy will be to predominantly work with the Trading Standards Service covering the Birmingham area and therefore the successful applicant will need to live within a reasonable distance of Birmingham to attend at shorter notice. The other role will be to work across Birmingham Trading Standards and the England Illegal Money Lending Team and so the successful applicant may live further away. You will be asked to express your preference during the interview stage.

Under the general direction of the Financial Investigation Team Operations Manager, you will conduct financial and criminal investigations under the Proceeds of Crime Act 2002, including the enforcement of delegated legislation and other related duties as required.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan, conduct, manage and complete criminal, civil and financial investigations in accordance with relevant legislation, policies and procedures
  • Research, collect, collate and evaluate intelligence and information in accordance with the National Intelligence Model (NIM)
  • Provide specialist financial investigation advice, guidance and support to Trading Standards Officers and partner agencies
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with external agencies including but not limited to Police forces, HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC), Courts and Judicial Representatives, regional and national enforcement bodies
  • Maintain accreditation and professional competence as an Accredited Financial Investigator
  • Comply with the Council’s policies and procedures

We Are Looking For Candidates Who Have

  • Accreditation by the National Crime Agency as a Financial Investigator with Part 2 Confiscation Powers
  • Proven ability, experience and extensive knowledge of conducting financial investigations
  • Preparing high level, good quality, accurate reports and giving evidence in Court
  • Ability to work under pressure and to meet targets and deadlines
  • Good understanding of Trading Standards functions and legislation
  • Part 5 Powers desirable or a willingness to achieve the additional accreditations
  • Hold a current driving licence

What We Offer In Return

  • Membership of West Midlands Pension Fund – with generous employer contributions
  • Enhanced Holiday Entitlement – 30 days, increasing with length of service
  • My Rewards Scheme – access to over 800 brands providing discounts and savings
  • Health and wellbeing support – independent and confidential employee assistance and counselling
