West Midlands Trains delivers around 1,300 train journeys a day, for more than 60 million passengers a year, across our two brands - London Northwestern Railways & West Midlands Railways. We are committed to delivering a safe and reliable train service, by investing in our fleet of trains, stations and employees. As part of this investment we are looking to recruit a Technician on a full-time, permanent basis, based in Shrewsbury. Please note, it will be working permanent night shifts. You’ll be involved in maintenance exams, repairs, engine changes, interior and exterior works, heavy maintenance programmes, overhauls, modifications, and fleet-wide campaigns on the diesel units maintained at Shrewsbury.
Key Responsibilities
- To attend to the servicing, maintenance, repair, overhaul and modification of traction and rolling stock.
- Carry out planned preventative maintenance on rolling stock to laid down specifications.
- To where competent attend to In Service Failures and undertake the duties of Designated Person as required.
- Ensure the accurate completion of work records to include the generation of, completion of and sign off of work as complete and compile records of all work done in accordance with local instructions, to include use of any electronic Maintenance Management System.
- If required compile technical reports relating to work carried out.
- Ensure compliance with processes and procedures in respect of the Health and Safety, Quality and Environmental Management Systems.
- Where applicable instruct new entrants, apprentices, contractors, and visitors, on maintenance procedures, act as mentors as required.
- Make recommendations to management and technical staff that lead to the improvement of technical documentation, tooling or other work practices that would lead to improved productivity/efficiency, greater safety, or higher fleet reliability.
- Where required due to workload carry out other tasks as directed where competent to do so.
Skills, Knowledge & Expertise
- Completed appropriate apprenticeship or hold relevant qualifications in electrical / mechanical engineering as specified by current company policy.
- Knowledge of London Northwestern Railways & West Midlands Railways (LNWMR) diesel multiple units (DMU's) desired - not essential.
- Road Vehicle driving licence and authority to drive Railway Service vehicles.
- PTS / Designated Person / AP (Appointed person) Trained (if required).
- Power Plant equipment trained.
- PC / IT literate (Job specific training provided).
- Experience of Maintenance Management Systems (MMS) desired.
- Some specific additional skills in this grade group ie Lathe Operator, Carriage repairer/painter.
- To ensure continuity and an effective delivery of service, successful candidates will be required to commit to a minimum 14-month period in role after achieving competence.
