We are seeking an Environment and Energy Manager to lead our environmental and energy strategy across a diverse, multi-site rail network, playing a key role in delivering our decarbonisation and sustainability ambitions. This high-impact role shapes and delivers initiatives that improve environmental performance, cut carbon emissions, and drive energy efficiency. Working closely with the Head of Sustainability, you will influence investment decisions, embed best practice, and turn our sustainability commitments into measurable results.
You will set clear action plans, coordinate environmental management activities, and oversee internal audits. You will ensure robust governance, manage incident reporting, and implement measures that reduce future risk. You will also lead the collection, analysis, and reporting of environmental and energy data — providing clear insight that supports informed, board-level decision-making and continuous improvement.
Key Responsibilities- Develop and deliver environmental and energy strategies across multiple sites, ensuring compliance with Company and local requirements.
- Work with the Head of Sustainability to create and implement action plans that achieve environmental and carbon-reduction targets.
- Line-manage and develop one direct report, supporting a collaborative, high-performance culture.
- Collect, analyse, and maintain environmental data, providing accurate, meaningful reporting to senior leaders and the Board.
- Coordinate environmental activities, including audits, incident reporting, and initiatives to reduce carbon, waste, and operational costs.
- Identify and prioritise energy-efficiency opportunities, producing strong business cases for investment.
- Champion sustainability awareness and positive behavioural change across the organisation.
- A clear, actionable roadmap for reducing energy use and carbon emissions across the business.
- Stronger audit performance and more robust ISO compliance processes.
- Demonstrable reductions in energy consumption, carbon output, and associated costs.
- Improved engagement and ownership across operational teams in delivering sustainability initiatives.
This role is hybrid-based from our head office in Birmingham with frequent travel across our network.
Skills, Knowledge and Expertise- A STEM degree (or equivalent) plus professional membership or active progression toward membership (e.g., IEMA, CIBSE, Energy Institute).
- ISO 14001 and ISO 50001 internal auditing experience and a solid understanding of relevant ISO standards and sustainability frameworks.
- Proven experience delivering multi-site energy-saving programmes, supported by strong project management and problem-solving skills.
- High-level analytical and data management capability, including advanced Excel skills and the ability to produce clear, accurate reports for senior stakeholders.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder-engagement skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively and influence at all levels.
