Description
As Depot Cleaning Team Leader, you will be responsible for leading the delivery of the depot cleaning plan, ensuring resources, facilities and staffing are utilised effectively to achieve customer expectations, quality standards and business objectives. You will oversee day‑to‑day operations, monitor workforce requirements, and make recommendations on staffing levels and working practices to support a safe, efficient and high‑performing cleaning operation.
Working closely with your team, you will continuously identify opportunities to improve processes and enhance service delivery, ensuring the highest standards of cleanliness are maintained across the depot. This is a hands‑on leadership role, and you will also support cleaning activities as required to help achieve operational goals and deliver an excellent environment for colleagues and customers alike.
What does the role involve?
- Leading, supporting and motivating the cleaning team to deliver high standards of train presentation and depot cleanliness.
- Planning and coordinating cleaning activities, staff rosters and resources to meet operational requirements.
- Carrying out team briefings and one‑to‑one meetings to ensure colleagues are informed, engaged and performing effectively.
- Identifying opportunities to improve safety, quality and efficiency across cleaning operations.
- Ensuring compliance with all health, safety and environmental policies, including COSHH and industry standards.
- Monitoring attendance, training compliance, PPE requirements and other people management activities.
- Managing cleaning equipment, materials and associated costs to ensure resources are used effectively.
- Monitoring performance against KPIs and maintaining compliance with business, contractual and quality standards.
- Working closely with operational teams to support depot performance and deliver a safe, clean environment for customers and colleagues.
- Supporting continuous improvement initiatives and contributing ideas to enhance the train environment and customer experience.
- This is a hands‑on leadership role that combines team management, operational planning and a strong focus on safety, quality and continuous improvement.
What skills and experience do I need to do the job?
- Practical experience within cleaning operation
- Experience in either supervisory or managerial role with a proven track record of achievement
- NVQ Level 3 supervisory management or ILM (training can be provided)
- The ability to communicate effectively and manage poor performance
- Good IT skills for word processing, spreadsheets and similar pc based planning and performance management tools
- Good financial awareness and effective decision making in and isolated environment where immediate reactions are required
- Be prepared to undertake formal training as required.
To ensure continuity and an effective delivery of service, successful candidates will be required to commit to a minimum 14-month period in role after achieving competence. This also includes existing colleagues who move by internal promotions and transfers.
