Position Summary: A critical exploration of American literature in the 20th century (and/or 21st centuries), which may include novels, essays, plays, poetry, and recent forms such as graphic novels. Topics may include the rise and evolution of Modernism, the Harlem Renaissance, the Beat Generation, Post-Modernism, pop culture; the representation of Indigeneity, immigration, ethnicity and race; the literary treatment of civil rights, class, gender, and sexuality; the evolution of literary forms in the face of industrialization, urbanization, technological transformation, and ecological adversity; the self-conscious situating of literary works amidst war, geopolitical conflict and cooperation, globalization, and the culture wars, among others.
