Wise is a global technology company, building the best way to move and manage the world’s money. Min fees. Max ease. Full speed. Whether people and businesses are sending money to another country, spending abroad, or making and receiving international payments, Wise is on a mission to make their lives easier and save them money.

About the role:

We are looking for a Senior Staff Engineer (IC5) to join our Risk Assessment Platform squad. Our mission is to build a platform that allows Wise product teams to stay safe and compliant by executing risk assessments quickly and easily, while enabling our Financial Crime and Compliance teams to build controls with minimal effort. Positioned exactly between these two worlds, our team is in the best possible place to drive company‑wide impact. We ensure our customers can achieve their goals safely, conveniently, and without friction. Because we sit at the heart of the action at Wise, we deal with massive amounts of data and high-throughput systems—making this an incredibly attractive playground for engineers who love solving complex, high‑scale problems.

How we work:

At Wise, we believe in autonomy, alignment, and impact. As an IC5 engineer, you won’t just be executing tasks—you will be a visionary. You will own fundamental components and libraries, collaborate across diverse teams, and define the long‑term technical strategy for your domain. We value open communication, high technical standards, and a passion for solving real‑world financial challenges.

What will you be working on?:

  • Data Integrity: Solving complex problems related to data lineage, completeness, and validity.
  • Bridging the Gap: Designing and defining the technical contracts between Product teams and Financial Crime teams.
  • End-to-End Flows: Building robust, scalable e2e risk assessment workflows.
  • System Optimization: Driving initiatives to continuously improve our speed, latency, and cost metrics.

What do you need?:

  • Deep Backend Expertise: Solid, production‑proven experience with Java and modern (micro)service architectures.
  • System Design & Protocols: A rock‑solid understanding of both synchronous and asynchronous communication protocols.
  • Advanced Architecture Skills: Experience owning and designing fundamental components, shared libraries, and core infrastructure.
  • Technical Leadership: The ability to act as a visionary, mapping out a clear technical strategy for your ownership area and mentoring others to get there.
  • Strong Communication: Exceptional collaboration skills, with the ability to translate complex technical concepts and align a highly diverse set of stakeholders.

Nice to Have:

  • Previous experience working closely with data streaming and processing frameworks.
  • Hands‑on experience solving complex data validity or data lineage problems at scale.
  • Background working in Fintech, Regtech, or high‑throughput financial systems.

What do we offer:

Starting salary: £145,000 – £182,000 + RSU

For everyone, everywhere. We’re people building money without borders — without judgement or prejudice, too. We believe teams are strongest when they are diverse, equitable and inclusive. We’re proud to have a truly international team, and we celebrate our differences. Inclusive teams help us live our values and make sure every Wiser feels respected, empowered to contribute towards our mission and able to progress in their careers.
