Company Description

Wise is a global technology company, building the best way to move and manage the world’s money. Min fees. Max ease. Full speed. Whether people and businesses are sending money to another country, spending abroad, or making and receiving international payments, Wise is on a mission to make their lives easier and save them money. As part of our team, you will be helping us create an entirely new network for the world's money. For everyone, everywhere.

About the role

We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer to join our Reliability Engineering team at Wise. You will work cross-functionally with software engineering teams across the business, identifying and implementing reliability improvements to our most important business services.

Our team's mission: Enhance the reliability, performance, and compliance of Wise products for customers. Bridge the gap between Product and Platform through collaboration, hands-on contribution, and co-ordinating org-wide efforts.

How we work

We operate on a strong belief in automation and reusable design. We’re looking for people who can step back and think holistically about the ecosystem, design scalable solutions, and follow through on implementation, drawing on the resources across the rest of the Platform tribe. As Wise scales, the reliability expectations for our products continue to increase. To sustain the growth, we must continuously iterate on the services we run, with a focus on availability and customer experience. We’re looking for an engineer with relevant expertise who can analyse complex requirements and deliver simple solutions to help product teams achieve our mission with speed and confidence.

What will you be working on?

  • Identify opportunities to optimise the performance of our critical backend microservices, by implementing and improving the common libraries used by teams across Wise.
  • Develop and implement org-wide, resilient strategies in code, to address challenges in capacity, autoscaling, resiliency, performance and redundancy.
  • Deep-dive with teams into their services, suggest best practices, and implement changes to improve reliability.

What do you need?

We are fully aware that it is uncommon for a candidate to have all skills required and we fully support everyone in learning new skills with us. So if you have some of those listed below and are eager to learn more we do want to hear from you!

  • A product engineering background, and are looking to have a big impact.
  • Strong collaboration skills, an ability to jump into projects with limited context and be enthusiastic about influencing how teams prioritise reliability.
  • Strong experience working with microservices in a Kubernetes, cloud-based architecture.
  • Hands-on Software Engineering experience (Java or other backend languages) - you will be contributing to the Wise product and applying reliability best practices (development, resiliency patterns, observability).
  • Hands-on experience with troubleshooting Application, Database, Data related issues.
  • Strong prioritisation skills and effective time management.

We are currently only considering local candidates as relocation support is not provided. For local candidates we are able to support transfer of visa sponsorship.

How to prepare for a job interview at Wise

Brush Up on Your Coding Skills

For a full-time software engineering role, it's crucial that we stay sharp with our coding abilities. Expect technical questions that might involve solving problems on the spot or discussing algorithms. Practise on platforms like LeetCode or HackerRank to get comfortable with the types of questions that often come up.

Know Your Tools and Frameworks

Make sure we’re well-acquainted with the tools and technologies listed in the job description. Familiarise ourselves with any specific frameworks or programming languages mentioned. If Wise uses React or Node.js, for instance, be ready to discuss how we’ve used them in previous projects or coursework.

Showcase Your Projects

Bring along a portfolio that highlights our best work. This could be code samples, GitHub repositories, or any side projects we’ve built. Make sure we can talk through our thought process for each project, especially the challenges we faced and how we solved them—this shows our problem-solving skills in action.

Prepare for Behavioural Questions

While technical skills are key, full-time positions also require cultural fit. Be ready to discuss our previous experiences and how we handle teamwork, conflict, and deadlines. Brush up on the STAR method—Situation, Task, Action, Result—to clearly articulate our past experiences when discussing how we've contributed to a team.
