In this role you will own the core risk architecture for Wise’s Europe Risk & Controls domain, expanding AML and financial crime prevention across Europe and the UK. You’ll design high-throughput, real-time, event-driven engines for CDD/EDD and fincrime detection, ensuring decisions are robust, explainable, and auditable. You’ll partner with Product, Compliance, and Data Science to translate regulatory complexity into performant code, mentor talent, and help scale systems that protect billions in transfers. This is a mission-critical engineering opportunity in a fast-moving fintech environment.

Responsibilities
- Design and scale distributed systems powering customer due diligence (CDD/EDD) and fincrime detection
- Provide technical leadership, setting strategy and mentoring senior engineers
- Collaborate with Product, Compliance, and Data Science to convert regulatory requirements into high-performance code
- Own end-to-end system delivery from initial design to live production metrics
- Architect event-driven architectures leveraging Kafka and SQL for real-time decisions
Key requirements
- 7+ years of Java experience with Spring Boot
- Hands-on experience with event-driven architectures using Kafka and SQL
- End-to-end product ownership from design to production metrics
- Ability to translate complex distributed architecture concepts for non-technical stakeholders
- Proven CI/CD experience
- Knowledge of AML, KYC, or fraud prevention is a plus
- Cross-functional influence
