Aston Institute of Photonic Technologies (AiPT) is seeking a Research and Innovation Associate in Network Testbeds for AI. The role is based on Aston University Main Campus and is a fixed‑term, full‑time position (36 months). Salary is £31,236 to £42,254 per annum at Grade 07 to Grade 08.

The successful candidate will work under the supervision of Professor Andrew Ellis on an international EPSRC and Research Ireland funded project aimed at dramatically reducing energy consumption of data centre interconnection networks through optical combs, tuneable lasers, and flexible architectural innovations.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct research in purpose‑built photonics facilities at Aston University.
  • Develop and optimise a network demonstration testbed for tuneable laser‑based switching, including recirculating configurations that emulate large‑scale networks exceeding 1,000 nodes.
  • Address integration challenges to enable buffered real‑world data traces to be transmitted across the network, demonstrating optically routed interconnect capabilities.
  • Support network‑level simulations and contribute to the overall project deliverables.

Qualifications

The candidate should demonstrate a strong track record in at least two of the following areas:

  • Use of fast tuneable lasers in digital signal processing for high‑capacity optical communications.
  • Development of recirculating loop‑based optical communications testbeds.
  • Use of optical frequency combs or fast tuneable lasers in high‑capacity communication systems.

For applicants with a highly relevant first degree or with relevant industrial experience, consideration will be given for appointment at Grade 07 for up to 36 months. Candidates with a PhD or equivalent experience can indicate a desire to be considered for Grade 08 for up to 30 months.
