Fixed Term until 31st March 2027

Wirral Council is looking for a motivated and practical Highway Technician to support the delivery of our Structural Maintenance Programme and help keep the borough’s roads safe, well‑maintained, and fit for purpose. This hands‑on role is ideal for someone with experience in highways, civil engineering, or road maintenance who enjoys working outdoors, supporting engineers, and contributing to essential public services.

About the Role

  • Carry out site inspections, measurements, and condition surveys.
  • Record accurate data using asset management systems and prepare inspection reports and photographic evidence.
  • Support engineers, asset managers, and contractors in delivering maintenance and surfacing works.
  • Liaise with residents, businesses, contractors, and other council teams to resolve site issues and respond to enquiries.
  • Assist with bills of quantities, pre‑contract documentation, and supervision of works on site.
  • Promote health, safety and environmental compliance and help identify and mitigate risks on the network.

About You

We are looking for someone who can work independently, stay organised, and maintain a professional approach when dealing with contractors and the public. You will bring:

  • GCSE Maths and English (or equivalent).
  • Experience in highways, road surfacing, or civil engineering inspection.
  • Knowledge of road materials, common defects, and highway standards.
  • Strong IT skills and the ability to interpret drawings, specifications, and works information.
  • A methodical, detail‑focused approach and good communication skills.

Desirable:

  • NRSWA, LANTRA or IHE accreditation;
  • ONC/HND in Civil Engineering;
  • experience with NEC contracts;
  • experience using asset management systems.

Additional Requirements

  • Full UK driving licence, with the ability to travel across the borough.
  • Ability to work flexibly, including occasional evening or weekend work.
