Fixed Term Contract – 18 months. Birkenhead Park - one of the world's most influential public parks and the inspiration behind New York's Central Park is entering an exciting period of development. Wirral Council is seeking a highly motivated and skilled Community Engagement and Volunteering Officer to play a key role in progressing the park's nomination for UNESCO World Heritage Site status and supporting major externally funded heritage projects.
About the Role: This is where relationships matter. You’ll be at the heart of the park’s community, working with residents, visitors, volunteers and partners to ensure their voices are heard and reflected in future plans. Whether you’re developing creative engagement activities, supporting community-led initiatives or growing a diverse and welcoming volunteer offer, your work will help people feel part of something bigger and more meaningful. Day to day, you might be planning and delivering events that bring people together, building connections with schools and local groups, or using digital channels to widen participation and tell the park’s story. You’ll also act as a key link between the community and the wider project team, helping turn ideas into action and ensuring engagement is inclusive, accessible and impactful.
About the Candidate: We’re looking for someone who is naturally engaging and confident with people, who enjoys listening as much as leading, and who can build trust quickly across a wide range of communities. You’ll bring experience of delivering community-focused projects or events, but just as importantly, you’ll bring energy, creativity and a genuine passion for making a difference. You’ll be organised and self-motivated, able to balance competing priorities while keeping quality high. You’ll know how to communicate clearly and effectively, whether face-to-face, in writing or online, and you’ll be comfortable using digital platforms to reach new audiences. Most of all, you’ll be someone who sees potential in people, in partnerships, and in places and knows how to bring that potential to life.
