AWS Multi-Region Resilient Platform Lead
Location: UK / Hybrid
Employment: Full-time
Role Purpose
Lead the design, build and production readiness of a secure, highly resilient, multi-region AWS platform for a banking sanctions screening flow. The role covers infrastructure engineering across Java Spring Boot services, Angular front end, EKS/Kubernetes, Oracle, MQ and Kafka integrations, with a strong focus on high availability, disaster recovery, security, observability and regulated-operational resilience.
Platform Scope
- Application Platform
- Data Integration
- Oracle DB, backup, restore, HA/DR
Key Responsibilities
- Multi-region AWS resilience: Design multi-AZ and multi-region deployment patterns, active-active / active-passive failover, RTO/RPO targets, DNS routing, backup/restore, recovery automation and resilience test approach.
- AWS infrastructure engineering: Engineer VPCs, subnets, routing, Transit Gateway, Direct Connect/VPN, security groups, IAM, KMS, Secrets Manager, WAF, load balancers, CloudWatch, CloudTrail and AWS Config.
- Kubernetes / EKS leadership: Build and harden production-grade EKS clusters, node groups, autoscaling, ingress, container security, workload scheduling, GitOps deployment and service mesh patterns where required.
- Database and integration resilience: Support Oracle HA/DR designs including RAC/Data Guard concepts, backup validation, capacity planning; design resilient Kafka and MQ patterns including replication, queues/topics, monitoring and recovery.
- IaC, CI/CD and automation: Own environment provisioning and repeatability using Terraform/CloudFormation, Ansible and CI/CD pipelines; ensure configuration is version-controlled, peer-reviewed and auditable.
- Security and compliance: Embed security-by-design, encryption, privileged access controls, vulnerability remediation, audit evidence and controls aligned to banking operational resilience expectations.
- Operational readiness: Lead service readiness, monitoring/alerting, runbooks, incident response model, DR rehearsal, performance checks, cutover support and hypercare transition.
Required Skills and Experience
- Experience: 10+ years in infrastructure/platform engineering; 5+ years delivering AWS production platforms in regulated environments.
- AWS: EKS, EC2, VPC, IAM, KMS, Route 53, Transit Gateway, Direct Connect, CloudWatch, CloudTrail, AWS Config, ALB/NLB.
- Kubernetes: EKS administration, cluster hardening, container networking, ingress, autoscaling, Helm, ArgoCD/GitOps and observability.
- Automation: Terraform, CloudFormation, Ansible, shell scripting and CI/CD tooling such as Jenkins, GitHub Actions or Azure DevOps.
- Data & Messaging: Oracle, Data Guard/RAC concepts, backup/recovery, Kafka operations, IBM MQ or enterprise MQ administration.
- Controls: Security hardening, vulnerability management, audit evidence, DR testing, operational readiness and production support governance.
Lead the infrastructure workstream across architecture, build, testing, release and go-live phases. Coordinate with enterprise architecture, app delivery, security, database, integration, network and operations teams. Chair technical design reviews, drive engineering standards, manage risks/dependencies and support architecture governance. Mentor engineers and ensure infrastructure design decisions are documented, reviewed and operationally supportable.
Automation
- Terraform/CloudFormation modules; environment build pipeline; configuration baseline; deployment and rollback automation.
Operations
- Monitoring dashboards; alerting thresholds; service support model; incident/problem procedures; production readiness evidence.
Resilience
- DR strategy; failover runbooks; RTO/RPO evidence; resilience test plans and reports; cutover and hypercare support approach.
Success Measures
- Production-ready AWS platform with no critical infrastructure security findings at go-live.
- Validated multi-region failover capability with agreed RTO/RPO and tested runbooks.
- Automated, repeatable and auditable environment provisioning across non-production and production.
- Operational observability, alerting, support model and DR evidence accepted by programme governance.
- Stable go-live/hypercare outcomes for a Tier-1 banking financial crime or sanctions screening platform.
Preferred Certifications
- AWS Solutions Architect Professional
- AWS Advanced Networking
- Certified Kubernetes Administrator (CKA)
- Certified Kubernetes Security Specialist (CKS)
- HashiCorp Terraform Associate
- IBM MQ Administration experience.
