A leading FMCG and packaging manufacturer supplying innovative resealable solutions across major retail, consumer goods and industrial markets. The business operates high speed extrusion and converting equipment and is known for strong engineering standards, continuous improvement and a hands on, collaborative culture. The environment is fast paced, quality driven and focused on delivering reliable performance for customers.
You will lead the engineering and maintenance team to ensure maximum equipment uptime, strong preventative maintenance performance and fast response to breakdowns. The role requires an experienced electro mechanical leader with proven capability managing complex machinery in an FMCG or packaging environment. Extrusion experience is highly desirable due to the nature of the site's production processes. You will coordinate maintenance activities, manage priorities, support production requirements and ensure all engineering work is completed safely, efficiently and to a high standard. The maintenance team consists of four electro mechanical engineers working a two-shift pattern covering 6am to 2pm and 2pm to 10pm Monday to Friday.
Key responsibilities include:
- Leading the engineering and maintenance team to deliver strong performance across safety, quality, delivery, cost and morale
- Managing daily engineering priorities including breakdown response, planned maintenance and project work
- Ensuring all extrusion, converting and ancillary equipment is electrically and mechanically maintained to required standards
- Maintaining and repairing site support equipment including chillers, compressors and sprinklers
- Ensuring planned preventative maintenance is scheduled correctly and completed on time
- Maintaining and enforcing use of the ILAC preventative maintenance system
- Carrying out electrical installation, inspection and testing in line with 17th edition regulations
- Ensuring the engineering workshop remains clean, organised and audit ready
- Implementing and maintaining 5S systems and shadow boards across the department
- Ensuring work raised through EWR and ILAC is completed promptly to minimise downtime
- Managing engineering spares and consumables to ensure adequate stock levels
- Liaising with suppliers and managing supplier performance to meet departmental needs
- Raising purchase orders within budget and maintaining cost control
- Driving a strong safety culture and ensuring all safe working practices are followed
- Reporting hazards and working with QHSE to maintain COSHH compliance
- Calibrating equipment including temperature controllers, width detectors and tension towers
- Planning holidays, call out cover and resource to ensure full site coverage
- Leading training, development and cross skilling across the engineering team
- Holding regular team meetings and one to ones to improve communication and performance
- Supporting continuous improvement and contributing to problem resolution meetings
- Working closely with Production and Operations to optimise machinery and process efficiency
- Participating in electrical, mechanical and site projects and leading maintenance activities
- Ensuring the team maintains high housekeeping standards and safe working conditions
- Attending company training to maintain regulatory compliance
- Completing any reasonable request from Group Leaders or Managers
The Person:
- Experienced engineering leader with an electro mechanical background
- Extrusion experience strongly preferred
- FMCG, packaging or plastics manufacturing experience highly advantageous
- Strong electrical and mechanical maintenance capability
- Experience leading or supervising engineering teams
- Knowledge of preventative maintenance systems and engineering planning
- Ability to manage priorities and respond quickly to breakdowns
- Strong communication skills with confidence coaching and mentoring teams
- Experience working with suppliers and managing engineering budgets
- Understanding of safety systems including COSHH and safe working practices
- Strong problem solving skills with a continuous improvement mindset
- Ability to work collaboratively with Production, Operations and QHSE
- Computer skills in Microsoft Excel and Word
- 17th edition qualification desirable
- Experience with calibration processes desirable
Benefits and Package:
- Salaried role up to £51,373 per annum
- On call allowance of £100 per weekend, approximately 10 weekends per year
- Minimum three hours at time and half for any call out
