A specialist machinery manufacturer undergoing significant growth and modernisation is seeking a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to lead the design of complex fibre-handling equipment and engineered systems. This role acts as a senior technical figure within the design team, owning mechanical design deliverables from concept through to completion and ensuring products meet customer, quality and industry standards.
You will work closely with the Mechanical Design Team Leader and cross-functional engineering groups, contributing to continuous improvement, supporting prototype development and driving best practice across design processes, calculations and manufacturing documentation.
The Role: Reporting to the Mechanical Design Team Leader, this position combines hands-on mechanical design with technical leadership, problem-solving and project support. You will produce 3D models and detailed manufacturing drawings, run stress and engineering calculations, support testing activities and engage with suppliers and customers to ensure robust, cost-effective and compliant designs.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead mechanical design activities across concept, detail design, prototype development and testing
- Produce 3D CAD models and fully detailed 2D manufacturing drawings (SolidWorks)
- Complete engineering calculations including stress analysis (ASME VIII, API 6A, API 17D)
- Support fluid dynamics and thermodynamic calculations where required
- Select materials and manufacturing processes to meet customer and industry standards
- Produce technical reports covering design rationale, calculations, development and testing
- Support and supervise prototype and qualification testing activities
- Manage non-conformance reports and implement corrective actions
- Respond to customer engineering queries and provide technical support
- Work closely with suppliers to negotiate capabilities, tolerances and manufacturing standards
- Contribute to continuous improvement of existing products and future product development
- Provide engineering support to sales, manufacturing, assembly, service and QA/QC teams
- Participate in external audits and ensure compliance with company policies and procedures
- Promote safe working practices and support Health & Safety requirements
The Person:
- HNC/HND minimum; BEng/BSc Mechanical Engineering preferred
- Ideally working towards or already holding Chartered Engineer (CEng) status
- Minimum 5 years’ post-graduate mechanical design experience
- Strong 3D and 2D CAD capability (SolidWorks preferred)
- Fully proficient producing detailed manufacturing drawings
- Experience with stress analysis to ASME/API standards
- Understanding of fluid dynamics and thermodynamics
- Knowledge of manufacturing processes: machining, forging, welding, fabrication, coating
- Strong problem-solving skills with a hands-on engineering mindset
- Effective communicator with suppliers, customers and internal teams
- Well organised, self-motivated and able to manage multiple design tasks
- Team-focused with a willingness to support and mentor others
