Data Engineer (Freelance)

Overview

WineFi is seeking a freelance Data Engineer to build and maintain the infrastructure that powers our models, dashboards, and research. This role is ideal for someone who thrives in lean environments and wants to see their work directly shape investment outcomes. Location: Remote (UK/EU preferred). Type: Freelance Contract (Part-time ad-hoc, project-based, potential for long-term collaboration).

Responsibilities

• Pipeline Development: Build and maintain ETL/ELT pipelines in Python for ingesting wine market, financial, and alternative datasets.
• Data Orchestration: Use Dagster (or Airflow/Prefect) to schedule, monitor, and manage workflows.
• Data Modelling & SQL: Design clean schemas and write performant SQL queries for analytics and ML-ready datasets.
• Cloud Infrastructure: Deploy and scale pipelines on AWS (S3, Lambda, ECS, RDS, etc.).
• BI & Reporting: Support analytics dashboards using Metabase for visualization and decision-making.
• Quality & Reliability: Implement validation, logging, and alerting to guarantee clean, reliable data.

Requirements

• Proven experience as a Data Engineer (2+ years), ideally in a startup or freelance setting.
• Strong Python programming skills (data pipelines, APIs, data wrangling).
• Experience building and maintaining live APIs
• Advanced SQL skills, including query optimization and schema design.
• Hands-on experience with AWS cloud services.
• Familiarity with Dagster, Airflow, or Prefect for orchestration.
• Comfortable with BI tools (ideally Metabase).
• Strong communicator, able to work independently and asynchronously.

Nice-to-have

• Experience with financial, time-series, or alternative asset datasets.
• Familiarity with machine learning workflows and feature engineering.
• Interest in wine or luxury goods markets (not required, but a bonus).
• Willingness to learn new things and share your knowledge.
