Window to the Womb specialise in private diagnostic ultrasound baby scans and are looking for a warm, confident and enthusiastic individual to join our Hitchin clinic as a Scan Assistant & Phlebotomist.
The primary role will be to act as a Scan Assistant, supporting expectant parents throughout their visit and assisting the sonographer during appointments. In addition, you will carry out phlebotomy procedures as required to support our clinical services.
This is a rewarding position suited to someone who is compassionate, organised and comfortable working in a family-focused environment.
Phlebotomy experience and qualification are essential. Full training will be provided for the scan assistant duties.
Hours of Work
This role includes weekend working. Current rota pattern:
- Tuesday: 14:45–21:00
- Friday: 13:45–21:00
- Saturday: 08:45–18:00
- Sunday: 10:00–17:30
The position begins on a zero-hours contract, with the opportunity to progress to part-time contracted hours following a successful 3-month probation. Estimated weekly hours: 20–30 depending on clinic requirements.
Main Duties and Responsibilities1. Scan Assistant (Core Responsibility)
- Provide direct support to the sonographer throughout the scan process.
- Prepare the scan room before appointments and ensure a smooth patient flow.
- Communicate clearly with families, guiding them through the appointment.
- Assist with digital imaging, media packages and scan recording equipment.
- Ensure information provided to customers is accurate, reassuring and easy to understand.
- Support the clinical team in maintaining documentation and compliance standards.
2. Customer Care & Experience
- Welcome expectant parents and their families, creating a warm and friendly environment.
- Build rapport and ensure the experience is calm, positive and memorable.
- Handle enquiries professionally and maintain excellent service standards.
3. Phlebotomy Duties
- Perform blood collection safely and in line with clinical protocols.
- Label and process samples accurately and complete required documentation.
- Maintain phlebotomy supplies and ensure correct disposal of sharps and clinical waste.
- Provide clear information and reassurance before, during and after blood draws.
4. Sales & Upselling
- Promote scan upgrades, printed images, digital packages and merchandise.
- Capture opportunities to support additional services based on customer interest.
5. Sensitive Situations
- Support families with empathy if unexpected or emotional outcomes occur.
- Follow communication guidelines and maintain confidentiality and dignity.
- Ensure all required documentation is completed professionally.
6. Clinic Hygiene & Presentation
- Maintain a clean and welcoming environment throughout the working day.
- Follow infection prevention and control procedures.
- Support end-of-day cleaning and clinic preparation for future sessions.
7. Reception & Administration
- Support reception duties including check-in, payments and appointment management (training provided).
- Carry out general administrative tasks to support clinic operations.
About You
We are looking for someone who is:
- Qualified and experienced in phlebotomy (essential).
- Naturally friendly, confident and comfortable interacting with families.
- Compassionate, patient and able to support emotional situations professionally.
- Highly organised with strong attention to detail.
- Comfortable using computers and digital recording systems.
- Able to work weekends as standard.
