The Lower School Acceleration, Enrichment, and Challenge Teacher provides differentiated instruction for students in Kindergarten through Grade 2 in language arts and math. The individual in this position must understand the emotional and educational needs of children, be able to effectively communicate with them, and support classroom teachers to design and implement differentiated instruction for all students.

The Lower School Acceleration, Enrichment, and Challenge Teacher will work closely with the Director of Support Services, the Support Services team, the Director and Associate Director of Lower School, other faculty members, students, and parents. The individual in this position teaches and serves in a manner that advances and upholds the mission and philosophy of Winchester Thurston School.

The Lower School Acceleration, Enrichment, and Challenge Teacher is responsible for the following duties and responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with grade-level teachers and specialists to create and support differentiated activities in the classroom for all students.
  • Teach Lower School students who require enrichment or accelerated instruction in language arts and math.
  • Support grade-level teachers and specialists to create enrichment opportunities for all students in the classroom.
  • Co-plan lessons with grade-level teachers and specialists in accordance with Lower School curriculum that address differentiation, enrichment, and acceleration and uphold the school's educational philosophy.
  • Identify and engage in professional development opportunities that focus on differentiation, enrichment and acceleration.
  • Complete standardized testing and data collection to identify students with accelerated learning needs.
  • Communicate with administrators, parents, and teachers in a timely manner regarding curriculum overview, activities, and progress of students, and other related activities.
  • Work as a team member with teaching colleagues and administrators by attending all school wide meetings, department meetings, Lower School faculty meetings, and in-service days, and serving on committees as needed.
  • Create and maintain an appropriate and organized classroom environment with an emphasis on child safety and well-being.
  • Work on curriculum revision and program development with the Director of Student Support Services, Director of Academics, Director of Lower School, and other teachers in the department and the Lower School.
  • Demonstrate enthusiasm for and engagement in the school's City as Our Campus initiative, actively seeking meaningful community connections for experiential learning opportunities within and outside the classroom.
  • Commit to ongoing professional growth and play an active role in the professional development process.
  • Assist the admission process by meeting with prospective families, attending admission events, and helping screen prospective candidates for admission.
  • Serve as an active member of the Lower School by engaging with colleagues, participating in events and activities, and fulfilling additional duties.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education and experience teaching in an elementary setting.
  • Experience teaching reading and math in an elementary setting.
  • Experience with gifted curricula (preferred).
  • A Master's degree in related field, reading specialist certification or gifted education certification (preferred).
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and in one-on-one settings.
  • Experience using educational technology.
  • Educational philosophy consistent with that of the school.
