Lead/Float Phlebotomist | NORTHSHORE Woburn, Stoneham, Wimington, Winchester

When you join the growing BILH team, you’re not just taking a job, you’re making a difference in people’s lives. Patient Service Center Float Phlebotomists work in multiple Patient Service Centers (PSCs) staffed by Beth Israel Lahey Health Phlebotomy Services, as needs arise, to:

• Cover for PSC Phlebotomists’ Paid Time Off, other absences, and FLMAs.
• Cover for vacant PSC Phlebotomist positions.
• Reduce patient wait times in PSCs that have longer wait times than desirable.
• Facilitate the opening of new lab Patient Service Centers.

As a Float Phlebotomist, you will have the opportunity to gain a vast amount of experience, working with a variety of patients, team members, and health care providers. This unique role will allow you to enhance your skills and prepare you for opportunities for further growth within the organization.

• Maintains adequate staffing levels and efficient, effective workflow and scheduling.
• Provides training to phlebotomists to ensure competency.
• Provides data input for the payroll system in the absence of Supervisor and Phlebotomy Leaders.
• Acts as a technical resource for all difficult Phlebotomy blood draws for the institution.
• Ensures rounds are completed as scheduled and provides assistance, as needed, to maintain timelines of routine and STAT blood draws.
• Communicates lab issues and problems to Clinical Supervisor/Clinical Manager and recommends resolution.
• On a daily basis, interacts and communicates with customers including patients, site office manager, physicians, and medical assistants.
• Shares on-call duties.
• Provides input for performance appraisals.
• Ensures 24/7 coverage for Inpatient Rounds.

• High School diploma or GED required.
• Registration Phlebotomy Certificate preferred.
• 1-3 years related work experience required.
• Basic familiarity with computers.
• Ability to navigate at a basic level within web-based applications.

• Decision Making: Ability to make decisions that are guided by general instructions and practices requiring some interpretation. May make recommendations for solving problems of moderate complexity and importance.
• Problem Solving: Ability to address problems that are routine, somewhat repetitive and generally solved by following clear directions and procedures and by identifying opportunities for process improvements.
• Independence of Action: Ability to follow general instructions and procedures as provided. Work is monitored by supervisor/manager.

• Oral Communications: Ability to comprehend and converse in English to communicate effectively with medical center staff, patients, families and external customers.
• Knowledge: Ability to demonstrate full working knowledge of standard concepts, practices, procedures and policies with the ability to use them in varied situations.
• Team Work: Ability to act as a team leader for small projects or work groups, creating a collaborative and respectful team environment and improving workflows. Results may impact the operations of one or more departments.
• Customer Service: Ability to provide a high level of customer service to patients, visitors, staff and external customers in a professional, service-oriented, respectful manner using skills in active listening and problem solving. Ability to remain calm in stressful situations.
• Social/Environmental Requirements: Work requires close attention to task for work to be accurately completed. Intermittent breaks during the work day do not compromise the work. Work routine is fairly consistent, but employee needs to be able to use judgment to respond to events several times a week. No substantial exposure to adverse environmental conditions.
• Health Care Status: HCW1: Regular, day-to-day contact; both face-to-face and hands-on (having close contact within three feet for at least five minutes). Examples: physicians, clinical nurses, phlebotomist, medical assistants, PFT tech, and x-ray tech. Health Care Worker Status may vary by department.
• Sensory Requirements: Visual clarity.
